A health dimension added to NASH

POPULATION Services International (PSI) will be sponsoring the national finals of the National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) bringing a health dimension in the sport.
The sponsorship package was unveiled last Tuesday in Harare. PSI is a global health organisation dedicated to improving the health of people in the developing world by focusing on serious challenges like a lack of family planning, HIV and AIDS, barriers to maternal health, and the greatest threats to children under five, including malaria, diarrhoea, pneumonia and malnutrition.
PSI gets on board promoting male circumcision among adolescents and school boys are their main target group.
Research says circumcision reduces chances of contracting sexual transmitted infections by 60 percent.
In Zimbabwe the programme was launched in 2009 and about 300 000 men and adolescent boys have been circumcised.
Under the sponsorship deal, ‘Pinda muSmart/Ngena kuSmart’ will provide soccer kits for the Under-20s for use at the inter-provincial competitions. Each player will receive a soccer kit while the schools get soccer balls.
Apart from that all the participating schools will be assisted with accommodation and transport to attend games in Harare.
The winner of the competition will receive a floating trophy and US$1 000 while the first runner-up earns US$500.
The second runner-up will get US$250. Twelve teams will battle it out at the national finals slated for October 4 and 5 at Prince Edward High School. Harare province will have three representatives.
Hosts Prince Edward, defending champions Churchill and a team – to be known this Friday in the provincial finals – represent Harare.
Matabeleland North and South provinces, Midlands, Masvingo, Mashonaland East, West and Central, Manicaland and Bulawayo will send one team each to the national finals.
For continuity’s sake, a team of excelling players will be selected and will train together for three to four months and later challenge premiership teams.
The select will be called ‘Team Pinda muSmart/Ngenaku Smart’.
