City council must extend working hours

Published on

EDITOR- I would like to commend the city council authorities for making great strides in decongesting the city of Harare especially during peak hours.
Driving in the central business district during peak hours had in recent times become a nightmare characterised by a lot of delays caused by unscrupulous kombi drivers who were blocking traffic to pick up passengers at undesignated points.
Kombi drivers had literary taken over the City of Harare and all the roads by creating bus stops wherever they felt conducive for their operations ignoring other road users’ needs.
However, with the introduction of the parking bays and the launch of a combined operation by the city council and the Zimbabwe Republic Police to clamp down on kombi operators who are contravening road regulations, there, is now sanity on the city roads.
The operation has brought discipline to kombi drivers and decongested the city as the parking bays have reduced the population of kombis in the CBD.
But it is my view that the city authorities should extend their working hours up to 7 pm or 8 pm because most of the kombi drivers are aware that council workers knock off around 5 pm and after that they start flocking the CBD knowing that there will be no people to arrest them.
