I have shown you that ‘science’ is at the heart of our agricultural activity to produce food crops.
If our science is poor and we have little understanding of how our crops grow and how the soil supports this growth, we may produce low yields and worsen hunger and malnutrition among the people.
We all know that those who attempt to grow a crop without applying the correct ‘science’ experience poor harvests or total crop failure.
This principle applies to areas other than agriculture too!
We are saying therefore that there is no substitute for ‘sciences’ in any other field of human endeavour.
Sciences such as biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics are essential for our industrial productivity to improve.
We ignore them at our own peril.
We shall explore other examples in the next episode as we continue to demystify science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The feared ghost of STEM must be exorcised in the schools and colleges.
Our teachers need to lose their fear of STEM so they embrace it as everyday phenomena surrounding us.
The curiosity of children must be whetted to promote the learning of science. Only then can we unleash the creative genius of the African child and take Africa to great technological heights!
