EDITOR — Allow me to air my views in your newspaper about the Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu Highway dualisation.
As a motorist, I think the dualisation was long overdue. It’s welcome news that the process is now starting. I wish the construction be done in the short-term.
As a people, we have become accustomed to projects taking years and years to complete, even those that can be finished in the short-term.
I drive a haulage truck from Joburg to the DRC every two weeks and I have seen it all along the highway.
Each time you drive from Harare to Beitbridge, I won’t be settled.
I will be on the lookout for other heavy vehicles and buses. Side-swipe accidents have become a common occurrence while donkeys and cattle are a hazard between Bubi and Beitbridge.
Please don’t forget to erect fences along the highway to avoid accidents caused by domestic animals.
Being Zimbabwe’s busiest and most economically significant highway which is part of the north-south corridor that directly links landlocked Zimbabwe and Zambia with access to the Indian Ocean ports of Durban and Richards Bay in South Africa, this dualisation will accelerate our economic growth.
We understand that the project will cost more than US$2 billion. We hope that communities along the highway will in one way or another reap financial benefits from the project.
Thank you to the leadership of Zimbabwe for being serious about development.
The country stands to benefit significantly from this project.

Chivhu.
