Poems of the liberation struggle

Published on

POLITICIANS are now preparing for next year’s general elections and artistes are not being left out as they complement them through producing works that push for various political agendas.
A Hopely Farm artiste Brightshow Mudungwe also known as Cde Nyanduri has released his debut album of dub poetry celebrating the successes that have been recorded in the country from the days of the liberation war up to now.
Titled Chokwadi Hachirove, the four track album is celebratory poetry.
Titles of the poems include ‘Magamba eZimbabwe’, ‘Hutongi’, ‘Hutungamiriri’ and ‘Yakauya Neropa’.
The poems are a reminder of the sacrifices that were made by the gallant sons of daughters of Zimbabwe during the liberation struggle.
Chokwadi Hachirove is a unique album that spreads the message of the liberation struggle praising the revolutionary leaders that include President Robert Mugabe.
In the track ‘Magamba eZimbabwe’, Cde Nyanduri pays tribute to the fighters of the Second Chimurenga.
‘Yakauya Neropa’ vividly describes how attaining freedom was no stroll in the park, but a painful process that led to loss of thousands of lives.
In an interview with Patriot Arts, Cde Nyanduri said he had used the poetry medium for its effectiveness as a communication tool.
“Fellow artistes are making use of music to relay their message therefore I decided to use poems just to deviate from the norm,” he said.
The poet, said, he was motivated by the desire to spread the real story of the country that has largely been distorted by Western-backed art practitioners.
As we approach the elections, various arts stakeholders have become willing tools of the regime change agenda and in the name of purported ‘democracy’ have gone into overdrive producing works that belittle the liberation war and gains it brought.
Cde Nyanduri said Zimbabweans as they go to cast their vote must know and appreciate where the independence and peace that they enjoy came from.
“The story of the liberation war never gets tired or old,” he said. “Every year we have new voters born in a free Zimbabwe who might not fully appreciate the war that brought independence.
My poems have a very important message for the voters, a message they should listen to and take heed of before they go and cast their vote.”
Although Chokwadi Hachirove is Cde Nyanduri‘s debut album, he has been doing poetry for more than a decade.
In 2007 and 2008, he had several poems read on Radio Zimbabwe.
One of his popular poems which got a lot of airplay was ‘Nehanda Mudzimudzoka’.
The poem praises and chronicles the efforts of Mbuya Nehanda as a national leader who spearheaded the First Chimurenga which marked the beginning of organised resistance against the colonialists.
Cde Nyanduri was born in 1983 at Nyadire Hospital in Mutoko.
He was inspired to produce poems of the liberation struggle by his late parents who were war collaborators.
“Growing up my parents told stories about the liberation war in which they actively participated in,” he said.
“I also have an uncle, Isaac Chipuriro who left home for the war and did not come back thus stories about the liberation struggle are always in my heart.”
Cde Nyanduri joins groups such as the Light Machine Gun (LGM) Choir, Mbare Chimurenga Choir and Born Free crew who continue to tell the story of the struggle for independence.
As the country continues to fight for full political and economic independence, narratives from the struggle are a guiding compass ensuring that all the ideals of the revolution are brought to life.
Colonialists are on record saying they do not mind as long as Africans remain with political independence and while they have economic control.
And countries like Zimbabwe have ensured that the black majority are liberated in all arenas.
Music in a way, has become an important educational tool.
Songs and poetry for elections are not new phenomena. Renowned musician and liberation fighter Cde Dick Chingaira, better known as ‘Cde Chinx’ became popular during and after the liberation struggle for his songs that tell the Zimbabwean story.
Songs such as ‘Maruza Imi’ and ‘Shungu Dzedu’ that Cde Chinx sang during the struggle did not only boost the morale of the fighters but explained why the people were fighting and what they hoped to achieve.
