Versatile Fungisai under the spotlight

Published on

COULD Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave be the model of consistency in Zim-dancehall music?
This is the question dominating the music industry since the diva’s surprise shift from gospel to the dancehall genre last year.
Since that ‘transformation’ when she rocked airwaves with the hit song ‘Vanondibatirana’, Fungisai is set to continue riding the wave that catapulted her to instant stardom.
Artistes like Lady Squanda, Lady Bee and Ninja Lispy are some of the female voices that have been competing with male artistes in dancehall music.
However, the coming in of Fungisai with that gem of a track which she collaborated with Kelvin Kusikwenyu, also known as Killer T, was a statement of intent that she had what it takes to carve a niche in the Zim-dancehall genre.
The collaboration with Killer T, although taken by some pundits as a way to revive Fungisai’s faltering gospel career, did well to achieve its ‘purpose’; that of putting her in the spotlight again.
The song ‘Vanondibatirana’ topped various radio charts and Fungisai became the talk of town.
Surprisingly, despite that achievement, Fungisai insisted she was not switching from gospel to Zim-dancehall, but simply moving with the times.
After the release of ‘Vanondibatirana’, Fungisai became popular on social media, with some poking shots over her pose in one of the pictures that circulated widely on that platform.
This did not go down well with her and she threatened to quit music over what she described as cyber-bullying.
She, however, remained in the industry and despite the controversy surrounding the ‘Makomborero’ hit maker, it seems Fungisai is doing well in dancehall.
Her dancehall music continues to carry gospel lyrics that promote social reform through the word of God.
The recent release of a single ‘Kubasa Kwenyu’ reflects on Fungisai’s development and capabilities in music circles.
Without doubt, the single is a promising one and proves that the word of God can be transmitted in any genre.
“Kusimudzwa nevanhu handidi vanondirovera pasi ndoda kusimudzwa naJehovah.
“Vaitiseka huyai, vaitisvora huyai muone zvaitwa naJehovah,” are some of the song’s lyrics.
Just like ‘Vanondibatirana’, ‘Kubasa Kwenyu’ is a gospel song in the dancehall genre.
To show that Fungisai means serious business, she is also working on a collaboration with a Jamaican dancehall artist, Dwayne Forrester, also known as Dwayno, who collaborated with popular musician Vybz Kartel on the track ‘Don a Road’.
Dwayno has also showed interest in Zimbabwean dancehall artistes by collaborating with Emmanuel Manyeruke, professionally known as Guspy Warrior, on a track titled ‘Di Gal Deh’.
Fungisai is on record confirming the collaboration and revealing that the project will be released soon.
Fungisai has also had collaborations with local musicians including Jah Prayzah and Mudiwa Wood.
Her success in dancehall shows her versatility.
In Zimbabwe, dancehall music is dominated by men while the few female artistes in the genre struggle to gain prominence.
Fungisai, however, is among the few female artistes being appreciated by all age groups.
She has been active in the music industry since 2000 when she recorded her debut album under Elias Musakwa’s now defunct Ngaavongwe Records stable.
She has more than 10 albums under her belt and some of them include Tawananyasha, Zvirevo, Tinokutendai Ishe and Ndiye Jesu, among others.
