An achievement worth celebrating

Published on

I BEGIN on a sad note and once again pay my and our paper’s deepest condolences to the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) spokesperson Colonel Overson Mugwisi and family on the sad loss of their beloved daughter.
May her soul rest in eternal peace and the Almighty Musikavanhu give your family comfort in these difficult times.
But at the funeral I stumbled on a piece of good news.
The Commander of the ZDF General Constantine Chiwenga was there and I learnt that this illustrious son of the soil who was with us in the trenches of the liberation struggle recently completed his PHD studies.
There is an erroneous assumption that magandanga haana kufunda/abalwi bempi yenkululeko abafundanga, that we are a bunch of daft people.
And it’s heartening to learn and have the leaders of the struggle, the leaders of magandanga/abalwi bempi yenkululeko who distinguished themselves during the fight for liberation also doing well on the battlefield of scholarship.
His success, we unashamedly claim, is also our success.
He continues to represent our constituency very well.
The constituency of patriotic sons and daughters of the soil who continue to toil and improve themselves so that they be of greater service and value to our beloved country.
We are a nation of achievers that continue to strive to make our nation a leading light especially on the continent.
And there are sons and daughters of the soil that continue to heed the call to give their all to deliver top notch service.
Academic endeavours are no walk in the park, they are painful and stressful, the long and sleepless nights are just a small part of the struggle of scholarship.
We fought the liberation struggles because as a people we have refused, since time immemorial, to be dominated by others.
Thus we celebrate the achievements of this illustrious son of the soil and many others who continue to work to improve their lot and that of the country.
By and large, the West has had its way with us dominating the intellectual spaces.
The West in its arrogance even claims that if you want to effectively hide or keep something away from an African, put it in a book.
Intellectual spaces matter as much as our physical spaces.
And we must begin to dominate the intellectual spaces.
Many of us believe, wrongly, that the uniformed forces exist to do other things, but scholarship.
And through magandanga akaita savana/ abalwi bempi yenkululeko abafana lo Cde Guvheya we are experiencing the highest level of scholarship at the highest level of our military.
This bodes well for the nation.
Cursed are those that scorn education.
Even the Commander-in-Chief of the ZDF, President Robert Mugabe, is a highly learned man and that education has not only served him, but the country as well.
He has successfully stood for his country, the continent and the blackman in general because of his ability to grasp, understand, articulate and express issues.
Thus the achievement by General Chiwenga is no mean feat.
It is an achievement that must be celebrated at least by all progressive people that want to see this country realise its full potential.
Zimbabwe requires and demands brilliance in all its spheres.
We are a nation richly endowed.
Our vast resources, enough to serve the needs of the world, must be effectively managed and protected.
They must be managed and protected by us.
But it goes without saying that our key management and protection institutions must be manned by knowledgeable people.
We will get the best out of our people, our resources through knowledgeable people.
Let us continue to better ourselves.
