Christians: What’s wrong with Pledge?

Published on

EDITOR – EVER since the introduction of the National School Pledge by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, there are some so-called Christians making unnecessary noise.
They are against the issue of their children reciting the pledge.
For the benefit of those who do not know it yet, this is what the National School Pledge says:
“Almighty God, in whose hands our future lies,
I salute the national flag
United in our diversity by our common desire for freedom, justice and equality.
Respecting the brave fathers and mothers who lost lives in the Chimurenga/Umvukela and national liberation struggles
We are proud inheritors of our national resources.
We are proud creators and participants in our vibrant traditions and cultures.
We commit to honesty and the dignity of hard work.”
Editor, what is wrong with this pledge?
The same so-called Christians against this pledge would rather have their children recite pledges in foreign lands.
Surely what is wrong with saluting our National Flag and respecting our freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the independence we now enjoy?
Are those so-called Christian parents saying they do not want their children to commit to honesty and the dignity of hard work?
I smell a rat Editor.
I have a feeling there are some among us being used by our enemies to derail programmes that celebrate our Zimbabweanness.
Our enemies know that issues such as the National School Pledge fortify who we are as Zimbabweans and will entrench in the heart and minds of our children where we come from and where we are going as a people.
Yes, our enemies know that the National School Pledge will result in patriotic youths and inevitably patriotic citizens.
They know this will hinder their efforts of regime change in Zimbabwe.
One thing for certain, however, is the National School Pledge is here to stay whether so-called Christians like it or not.
And I want to urge our teachers to impress upon their pupils that there is nowhere in the Bible where Jesus Christ is opposed to patriotism, love of one’s heroes and the ethos of hard work.
It’s time to expose those who want to use Christianity as a lame excuse to promote the regime change agenda.
Ndatenda.
