EDITOR – OUR city fathers should be holistic if they are to restore sanity in Harare’s Central Business District.
The recent move to relocate vendors will be incomplete if they leave out pirate taxis (Mushika-shika) in town.
Those small cars are a menace too.
Although the war against vendors is far from over, the move to register them and move them to designated places is good.
Why not look for another solution of ending the pirate taxis or even register them to operate.
Trying to wage a war against them has failed on several occasions because trying to use force has more negative effects on other motorists.
I remember one day an elderly couple almost being run-over by a pirate taxi because it was fleeing municipal police.
The cat and mouse game between pirate taxis and council police is too bad for pedestrians and other road users.
Is it not better to register them and make them pay some form of tax?
Orderliness is needed in every business and I think that could be one of the best ways to tackle this sticky issue.
I don’t know if it’s true, but I also hear the pirate taxis are owned by council and police officers.
So how then do we deal with this situation whereby law enforcers are said to be also responsible for the mayhem in town?
Whatever the case I think as much as the issue of vendors is being dealt with, there must also be a solution for pirate taxis.
