Goodbye ‘Mawii’: You ran your race

Published on

GROWING up in Mzilikazi, Bulawayo, Highlanders legend Willard Mashinkila-Khumalo was not an ordinary man.
He was a legend not only in Mzilikazi, but in the entire City of Kings.
Besides being charismatic, ‘Mawii’ or ‘Nduna’ as everyone called him, was one of the finest footballers in the country.
No one could even talk about the famous Dream Team without mentioning Willard.
Just like the likes of Mercedes ‘Rambo’ Sibanda, Mawii was outstanding on the field.
I guess what made Willard exceptional was that despite being heavily built, he was a dribbling wizard who marshalled the midfield much to the amazement of many people.
But I suppose what also made Nduna a darling to many people was that he was a jolly good fellow, always smiling, so humble and would talk to everyone who approached him.
There will never be anyone else like Willard.
I remember before I left for the UK, I bumped into Willard in Chipadze, Bindura because then, he was coaching Mwana Africa.
He had a ‘pimped’ and tinted beautiful white Mazda pick-up and we chatted for a while reminiscing about the good old days in Mzilikazi and when Highlanders was the ‘Dream Team’.
That was the last time I saw him because the next day he was travelling to Bulawayo.
As much as I am saddened by your death Nduna, I’m proud of you because you ran your race and fought a good fight.
I will always remember you as the ‘General’ of that black and white army called Highlanders.
Rest in peace Nduna.
