Catholics’ historic ties with racism

Published on

WHEN race is used as justification by whites to treat blacks as inferior beings, that will never be accepted, be it in the religious or secular world.

The reverse is also true.

What becomes even more disgusting is the attempt to bless this weird thinking by quoting from the Holy Bible.

The Bible clearly states that we are all equal before the eyes of God. Once more, the Catholics fail to escape unscathed from this controversial issue.

For during the evil days of the slave trade, some Catholic Bishops are said to have publicly defended the right of whites to own black slaves. This exposes the Catholic Church’s links to one of the worst forms of racism and human rights violations.

We might have given the Catholics the benefit of doubt if this disgraceful racism link had died with the slave trade era.

But regrettably it did not.

Throughout history, the Catholic Church has been interfering in politics through its Pastoral Letters.

These are letters issued by Catholic Bishops, which spell out what is considered the Church’s ‘holy’ stance vis-a-vis any prevailing situation.

Thus it is these very letters which legitimised slave trade.

The glaring element of racism is easily discernible in the Pastoral Letters issued by our own Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ZCBC). Just like the capitalist white Western colonialists, the Catholics don’t like former liberation movements because of their African nationalistic grounding.

ZANU PF is no exception.

That is why their Pastoral Letters are on one or all of the allegations related to political violence, intimidation, denial of human rights, rigging of elections and dictatorship.

A typical one is the Pastoral Letter to Zimbabweans in the Diaspora of June 19 2012 by the ZCBC.

Here, the racist bishops heap all the blame for the deteriorating situation in the country on ‘misrule’ by the black ZANU PF Government.

Mind you, blacks who have been trained to think like these white racists are considered white.

In the letter, they don’t blame the illegal economic sanctions imposed on the country by the white West.

If anything, they have already issued Pastoral Letters calling for the imposition of sanctions.

And when they say it is up to the people of Zimbabwe to decide when they should be lifted, we know exactly what they mean.

This explains why MDC leaders, notably the US darling Tendai Biti, don’t tire of lobbying for continued sanctions, believe it or not, on their country.

“Real genuine healing and reconciliation can only take place when the environment is open, free and democratic,” argue the bishops in the Pastoral Letter to Diasporans.

We know what they mean by their myopic view of a ‘free and democratic Zimbabwe’.

Of course they don’t blame the illegal sanctions because these are meant to dislodge ZANU PF and, hopefully, replace it by whatever version of the MDC.

As we have said before, the Catholic Bishops should be concerned more about the rot in their Church and less about political matters that should be none of their business.

Continued cases of sexual abuses of women and children should be discouraged not only in the secular world but also in the holy Catholic Church.
