Let’s act against corruption

Published on

Corruption is like rust that eats deep into the staple.

It is a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the very fabric of our society.

Corrupt practices have stemmed from the various callous, greedy, self-motivated and self-seeking attitudes of some members of our society only interested in serving their pockets rather than serving the masses. Rent-seeking, embezzlement, conflict of interest, bribes and kickbacks, nepotism and cronyism, corruption in provision of services, political patronage, by any name corruption is evil.

It is the highest manifestation of decline in personal moral sensitivity.

Corruption thus inhibits economic growth and affects business operations, employment and investments and reduces tax revenue.

This dishonest or fraudulent conduct has severely affected us as a people and crippled many facets of the nation.

Corruption has retarded the efforts of both the private and the Government to improve the well-being of the people and the whole economy.

It is harmful and unhealthy to the whole economic and social systems.

It has led to misallocation of resources, inefficiency and decay of cherished and acceptable standards of behaviour and cultural values.

For any country, people, to develop sustainably indeed it is true that there is need for it to define its values and engage in activities that will sustain those set of values.

It is no secret that there has been a lot of indiscipline in the various sectors of our society, lack of integrity, the get-rich-quick syndrome and pursuit of easy money has characterised some of our officials both in the public and private spheres.

It is time everyone compliment ongoing efforts to rid the country of this scourge hampering economic revival efforts. We need value re-orientation, the ability to bring back, the good values in all our dealings.

Let us use formal and informal approaches to eradicate corruption.

Formal approaches must involve the use of school subjects in educating learners on civic matters of the state.

Government, private and corporate organisations must support the effort to eradicate the scourge by procuring materials such as books and equipment to support the educational sector.

Religious groups, traditional included, should nurture the human soul and make the human person genuinely rich.

It is no secret that religion as a system of belief exerts strong influence in the daily lives, cultural values and attitudinal re-orientation of members.

It is religion that should be at the forefront of instilling values such as integrity, truth, honesty, patience, trust-worthiness, faithfulness, love and kindness as well as obedience.

Parents on the other hand must endeavour to fulfill their parental roles, goals, values and manners that influence the children’s moral and social behaviour positively

Parents’ teaching and training of their children and adequate monitoring and guidance of their behavioural patterns at home and develop in them, self-control in absence of external authority.

Zimbabwe does not condone corruption.

The hunhu/ ubuntu (African humanness) philosophical ethics must flow naturally from the grassroots to the top.

There must be no room for corruption, there is nothing like a ‘little’ corruption, by any name corruption is evil and must not be condoned.

Corruption must not be downplayed or mildly dealt with.

  1. Dear Professor, Why not start at Obert Mpofu and work your way up. Greedy people are usually fat and its greedy people who can easily embrace corruption. So just look at the members of Cabinet and you’ll spot them a mile off. Concerned Zimbabwean
