This is no military coup!

Published on

THERE is a misconception that there has been a military coup in Zimbabwe.
The false news doing the rounds is that the military has taken over the day-to-day running of the country.
But to clear the air on this issue, it is important for Zimbabweans to revisit Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) spokesperson Major General Sibusiso Busi Moyo’s address to the nation on ZBC TV on Wednesday morning.
“To both our people and the world beyond our borders, we wish to make it abundantly clear that this is not a military takeover of Government.
What the ZDF is doing is to pacify a degenerating political, social and economic situation in our country which, if not addressed, may result in violent conflict.
We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice.”
Bear in mind that Major General Sibusiso’s address came after ZDF Commander General Constantino Guveya Dominic Nyikadzino Chiwenga had spoken on Monday about ZDF’s role in safeguarding the country’s peace and security. This was considering that thousands of gallant sons and daughters of the soil perished in order for Zimbabwe to be free and how as ZDF they could not just sit and watch criminals turn the country upside down.
They could not just sit and watch criminals hijack the revolution and country because as General Chiwenga said: “Zimbabwe’s history is hinged on the ideals of the revolution dating back to the First Chimurenga where thousands of people perished.
ZANU PF is the political Party that waged the Second Chimurenga for our independence; the struggle that caused the loss of over 50 000 lives of our people; the struggle in which many Zimbabweans, in one way or the other, sacrificed and contributed immensely for our liberation.”
The General further said: “We remain committed to protecting our legacy and those bent on hijacking the revolution will not be allowed to do so.
Further, we must understand that the freedoms that we enjoy today were as a result of supreme sacrifice by some of our countrymen and women and this must not be taken for granted.”
It must be noted that in ZANU PF, it is said ‘politics rules the gun’, but it is also worth noting that the gun can save the Party from disintegrating.
General Chiwenga reminded the people of occasions when the army took corrective measures after the stability of the party had been threatened.
These included the formation of FROLIZI, the Nhari-Badza rebellion, the Vashandi One and Two, among others.
These rebellions were crushed by the military, ‘but at no point did the military usurp power’, emphasised General Chiwenga.
Thus, the present corrective measures being taken by the military are just that and nothing else.
And perhaps what is important is that as things continue to unravel, Zimbabweans, as peace-loving people, are going about their business as usual.
They have heeded the call to desist from any violent activities and that must be commended.
But what is crucial for all Zimbabweans is to ensure that the interests of Zimbabwe are protected because Zimbabwe will never be a colony again!
