This is the Zimbabwe we want

Published on

THERE is a story that was largely ignored in the run-up to the July 30 2018 harmonised elections.

Even after the polls, it seemed as if it has been ignored.

This was, of course, until last week when the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, July Moyo, announced that Government will regenerate three of the country’s oldest suburbs, Mbare in Harare, Makokoba in Bulawayo and Sakubva in Mutare.

Prior to the July 30 2018 harmonised elections, President Emmerson Mnangagwa told us he would regenerate such places like Mbare.

He even made a surprise visit to the country’s oldest suburb.

This is no cheap talk.

And this was not political grandstanding.

This was, as is coming out now, a fulfilment of his Vision 2030.

This vision is anchored on revamping infrastructure.

It is also premised on creating new infrastructure through local skills.

Already, processes to dualise the Chirundu-Beitbridge Highway using local skills and resources are underway.

Mbare, Makokoba and Sakubva are not ordinary suburbs.

They carry special history and significance in Zimbabwe.

At the same time, Government is forging ahead with establishing a new city in Mt Hampden.

This is the Zimbabwe we want.

A Zimbabwe driven by massive investments in infrastructure.

A Zimbabwe that is moving in line with modern day development trends.

A Zimbabwe that matches global development standards.

Besides these factors, the country needs to provide its people with decent accommodation and top class facilities.

This is what Mbare, Makokoba and Sakubva have been yearning for over the years.

Decent accommodation, regeneration and development.

The conditions under which people in these suburbs are living in are not suitable for human beings.

That is the reality of our, and their, lives.

We have been lagging behind in terms of development.

And the new dispensation has said, it is high time we moved at par with other nations.

That is a noble initiative.

Yet the most critical aspect of this development is that we should preserve the historical artefacts of these three suburbs.

We should strike a balance between history and development.

Suburbs like Mbare, Makokoba and Sakubva carry a lot in terms of where we have come from as a nation.

As such, they should be preserved for future generations.

It is heartening to note that Minister Moyo intends to preserve the history of these suburbs while at the same time modernising them.

That is the kind of development that we desire.

In the same vein, the idea of smart cities present an array of opportunities for the people of Zimbabwe.

They also put the country on the global scope of economic, social, human and political development.

Government must give prominence to local contractors.

But these local contractors must deliver.

They must know that they are doing national service, not embarking on a self-enrichment exercise.

They must pay off Government’s faith in them by delivering quality service and products.

This is critical development that is coming in at a crucial time for the country and, as such, priority must be given to quality.

Zimbabwe is aiming to be at the apex of economic development and locals must be the driving force behind that development.

Let us deliver for the prosperity of our country.
