West wants to distort Mugabe legacy

Published on

AS we mourn the passing on of our former President Robert Gabriel Mugabe, we must guard against attempts by Western imperialists to distort the achievements of this revered pan-Africanist.

That Cde Mugabe was unequivocally determined to see economic emancipation of Zimbabwe and the rest of Africa is a given.

The Land Reform Programme, which sought equitable distribution of land among all racial groups, was a bold step towards uplifting the once economically oppressed blacks.

Of course this would entail positive discrimination in favour of the once marginalised blacks.

This move, more than any other, made the imperialists conclusively realise Cde Mugabe was committed towards the elevation of the lives of blacks.

This proved to be too bitter a pill for them to swallow.

A previous bold step towards uplifting the blacks through compulsory free primary education did not worry the whites.

After all, to them, this meant more blacks they would employ on their farms would be fluent in their English language.

To them, the status quo would remain largely unchanged.

However, the avaricious whites, who had grabbed most of the fertile land, found themselves losing to blacks through the revolutionary Land Reform Programme.

But the loss of land, some of which was owned by British Lords who had never set foot in this country, riled the Western imperialists, who began to look at Cde Mugabe as a ‘dangerous’ African leader.

They resolved to destroy him at any cost.

The West was determined to use him as an example to like minded  African leaders that the Zimbabwean mode of revolution would only be repeated at their own peril.

This they did through illegal sanctions, name calling and using their monopoly of mass media to paint Cde Mugabe as the devil incarnate.

But this only helped to bring out, in no uncertain terms, the true character and mould of Cde Mugabe.

The founding leader of Zimbabwe stood up to the Western onslaught; proving to them that he was a principled leader even in the face of adversity.

He did not waver in his determination to empower his people on the road to ownership of their resources.

Even when he became Chairman of the African Unity (AU), he was unambiguous in his desire to see a united continent rid itself of imperialist control of its assets.

Thus, he inspired not only Zimbabweans, but the whole continent.

The West retaliated by calling him a dictator, a fascist, a tyrant, an autocrat and all that they deemed evil.

Unfortunately, our economy was sent ‘screaming’ because of the illegal sanctions meant to pin Cde Mugabe into submission.

But the pan-Africanist icon stood his ground.

Yet they would like to tell the gullible that the Zimbabwean economy was ruined by Cde Mugabe’s misrule.

That’s what they want the world to believe.

We should, therefore, not allow these Western enemies of the Zimbabwean revolution to tell the story of Cde Mugabe.

True history will tell us that Cde Mugabe is not only a Zimbabwean hero, but also that of the whole continent.

He was a principled man who stood for what he believed.

Chief among this was the belief in the economic emancipation, not only of Zimbabwe, but of the whole continent.

He was a brave man who would not bow to imperialist pressure.

Go well Comrade!

You fought a good fight!

May your dear soul rest in eternal peace!
