20 bouts for Chitungwiza boxing tourney

Published on

THE dormitory town of Chitungwiza comes alive this weekend (Saturday) with action from the boxing fraternity at St Mary’s Hall.
More than 20 bouts are slated in the St Mary’s Boxing Tournament that will see boxers from around the country and Namibia clashing.
Initially, the tournament was scheduled to be held in Chivhu running under the theme ‘Champions of Champions’, but logistical problems saw the town surrendering to Chitungwiza
The St Mary’s Boxing Tournament is the first of a series of tournaments to be held by the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation.
The fights will be amateur bouts.
Boxers from Mbare, Chivhu, Bindura, Mashonaland West and Namibia are expected to deliver a thrilling and value-for-money performance.
A majority of them have been training since the beginning of the year, but have not had the opportunity to showcase their skills due to lack of sponsorship for tournaments.
The participating stables include Alfonso Zvenyika, John ‘Computer’ Maphepha of Bindura, Army School of Physical Training and Sport, Manyuchi Boxing Club run by Charles Manyuchi, Prince Edward School, Lindenburg, Mambo Five Boxing Academy from Namibia and Arigoma Chiponda among others.
Tournament co-ordinator Gilbert Munetsi said the tournament presents a chance for national selectors to scout promising boxers who may represent Zimbabwe at various platforms like the National Youth Games, Zone 5 and the Olympics.
Manyuchi, who is the World Boxing Council International Welterweight Champion, participated at amateur level where he fought 37 fights before turning professional.
Such tournaments present amateur boxers with the opportunity to sharpen their skills before turning professional.
Boxing has been popular in high density suburbs such as Mbare, Chitungwiza, Mabvuku and Highfield with several Zimbabweans scaling dizzy heights like Proud Chinembiri, popularly known as Kilimanjaro, Langton ‘Schoolboy’ Tinago and Alfonso Zvenyika.
The sport, however, has suffered mostly from lack of sponsorship.
For example, Manyuchi’s fame and prowess in the ring fully manifested after he secured sponsorship from Zambian promoters.
Perhaps it is time for the Minister of Sport and Recreation to seriously consider the plight of boxing in the country.
No wonder our very own Dereck Chisora, a former British, Commonwealth and European Heavyweight Champion, steps into the ring wearing Union Jack shorts and representing the British who colonised us?
