Civic groups where are you?

Published on

WHILE I am not surprised by the actions of the civic organisations in this country there are times I wish that they at least, just for once, do something right.
Many organisations are registered for the purpose of protecting the vulnerable, mostly our children and women.
And many of these, over the years, have received thousands of dollars from donors to effectively carry out their duties.
Anyway we know how and why they operate but still we ask where the NGOs are, especially those that purport to fight for rights of the helpless and defenseless and to be the voice-of-the-voiceless in the true sense of the term.
Papers in the country are everyday carrying sad and shocking stories about the abuse of our children, especially the girl-child.
Incidences of rape are on the increase, rape of children, some just months old.
All are being violated and infected with diseases, they are being scarred for life and saddest as well as infuriating is the fact that many of the victims cannot speak for themselves.
The deafening silence of the civic organisations is thus very disturbing.
The sector has been quick to speak and scream about the so-called ‘victimisation’ of members of this political party by members of that political party.
They have been quick to sympathise and to offer support to the distressed elsewhere outside the country.
If the civic organisation can take to the streets for an issue in India what of issues closer to home.
Forgive us for accusing the sector of grandstanding and being hypocrites.
While we understand the anger felt all over the world about the gang-rape incident in India, what we do not understand is the silence by the civic organisations concerning rape incidents in the country.
Reports from authorities indicate that more than 2 400 children were raped between January and October this year.
And during this period we heard ‘noises’, deafening-noise made about the political ‘situation’ in the country especially prior to the peaceful harmonised elections that were conducted.
Zvinokatyamadza kuti kupondwa nekubhinywa kwevana vedu nemadzimai edu haisi nyaya kumasangano aya arikuramba anyerere.
If ever there was a time that we needed the civic organisations it is now.
We are a people that value our women and children so much that we want them to be safe all the time.
The numbers might not be alarming to these organisations, it is not surprising, many are Western sponsored and these are black children and women.
And we know how they regard our people.
But our children and women are important and valuable to us.
The Western sponsored civic organisation may remain silent and turn a blind eye to this disturbing phenomenon but we do not.
This may be the time civic organisations redeem themselves.
All that purport to be for Zimbabwe and care about what happens to its people must speak for the voiceless that are suffering.
Our children are the real voiceless and defenceless people that need protection from the vultures amidst us, vultures and beasts that are real and not perceived.
Anyway we do not need civic organisations to put an end to this scourge.
We are a responsible people, tirivanhu vane hunhu and we must, as a people, ensure that this madness comes to an end.
Our women are the custodians of our values and culture, vital lessons of life we have learnt from our mothers’ laps.
Our children are our future and we must protect them with or without civic organisations.
