Down with vote-buying

Published on

THE tendency by some people to get into power by splashing cash to entice gullible voters should be vigorously discouraged.
The evil is double edged for both the giver and the receiver equally share the blame.
Indeed all efforts should be made to make sure those who earn positions that way are somehow denied the chance to benefit from such a disgraceful practice.
This despicable practice came to the fore at the recent ZANU PF 6th National Youth League conference where some people were said to be involved in vote-buying.
This irked President Mugabe.
Reacting to this development the President who is also the First Secretary of ZANU PF had no kind words to those who dangled cash and those who received it.
“You are just rubbish, dirty rubbish as the person who has given you money both of you.
“The giver and the given are alike.”
What kind of leadership is expected from somebody who got his post through the power of his money, which was most likely ill gotten?
This is how empty-headed greedy leaders get into power.
What lesson has been imparted to the person who selected his candidate on the basis of the money he was given?
Such filthy practice is bound to cascade right down the fabric of the whole organisation or even society if not nipped in the bud.
A person should be voted into power because of his character and if it is a political organisation because of his adherence to its principles.
Nothing more nothing less.
Being persuaded to opt for a candidate who has offered you the biggest bundle of cash reflects a hollowness of principle from both.
How are you going to judge the performance of your preferred candidate if he wins?
At all costs such a culture should not be allowed to develop in our society at any level.
We would never have gained our independence if those who sacrificed their lives in the liberation struggle had been lured by cash.
Instead they were prepared to face the lethal weapons of the enemy in situations where death seemed to be certain.
We have on a number of occasions expressed our disgust at the American system of using force to induce compliance.
They did it in Iraq and their surrogates did it in Libya.
It is equally wrong to deny an individual freedom of choice by poisoning his chance to weigh his options with ‘dirty’ cash.
This system of putting cash at the forefront is the main reason which has seen corruption flourish in a number of organisations.
The obscene salaries and allowances some bosses have corruptly awarded themselves is a direct offshoot of insane love of money.
We have also seen how politics in our country has been muddled by the emergence of political parties, whose leadership has benefitted from donations from our former colonisers.
The love of money and not principle has seen some blacks among us become surrogates of Western interests through political parties like the MDC.
It is for this reason that we applaud the unreserved condemnation of those who were using cash to secure votes at the just-ended Youth League conference.
We hope those who got into power after buying their votes with cash are not going to be allowed to benefit from this corrupt practice.
Down with vote-buying.
