Dynamos stability at risk with Silva

Published on

DURING his unveiling in January, Paulo Jorge Silva pointed out the need to restore Dynamos’ badly battered and bruised ego by making the Harare giants champions again.
Many believed him.
Some even christened him the ‘Jose Mourinho of Zimbabwean football’ after the legendary former Chelsea gaffer, Jose Mourinho.
Even many more believed him.
At the same press conference, Silva promised to deliver what in modern football jargon is known as ‘fantasy football’, that artistic style of play best epitomised by the great Spanish club, FC Barcelona.
With those huge promises, great expectations were born.
Silva captivated the local football fraternity with his talk, but four games into the new Castle Lager Premier League (PSL) season, statistics staring former champions Dynamos point to a disastrous campaign this year.
A paltry four points coupled with childish antics by Silva are the net effect of the mockery that Dynamos has become.
With the leading pack in the race for the coveted title, FC Platinum and bitter rivals CAPS United cruising, it is safe for any serious football follower to conclude that DeMbare are all, but out of the race.
FC Platinum are sitting pretty at the top of the log standings with maximum points while CAPS United are closely behind with 10 points.
This means Dynamos have to beat the platinum miners twice and hope they lose at least two more matches in order to overturn the current eight-point deficit.
The situation is the same with regards to their arch rivals who have already beaten DeMbare this season.
With Silva at the helm, this looks highly unlikely and club president Kenny Mubaiwa knows this.
“Dynamos is a very big club. For me I don’t care what people say, but I have to prove on the pitch,” said Silva at that press conference.
Yes, Dynamos is not an ordinary or Mickey-Mouse club that Silva is slowly turning it into.
It is a sensitive entity.
It is a turbulent club where a pot of emotions never stops boiling.
It takes just a slight spark and all hell breaks loose.
Twenty one local league championship medals, a Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League silver medal and numerous domestic triumphs in knock-out tournaments describe the hallmark of Dynamos FC.
Yet this is the team that Mubaiwa, the club president, allows to be coached by a maverick character like Silva?
If the Portuguese was delivering, it would have been better for the hard-done Dynamos supporters.
But a return of just two goals in those four matches is simply unacceptable.
In fact, the Portuguese’s antics are now becoming a threat to the volatile club, which has in recent times been enjoying rare peace and stability.
It all started in January when Silva violated immigration regulations after he conducted official duties without a work permit.
In February, Silva disgraced himself when he attacked a female ZBC TV cameraperson who was covering the team’s training session.
Silva drew the wrath of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists and other leading women-rights groups for his despicable act.
In April, Silva’s turbulent Dynamos tenure continued when he was involved in an ugly scuffle with Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) leader Walter Magaya at Hellenics Sports Club during a friendly match.
Days before that embarrassing incident, Silva had again to be restrained by his assistants after he confronted members of the SuperSport crew covering their match against Chicken Inn at Barbourfields Stadium.
Silva was not pleased when referee Thomas Masa waived played on after a penalty appeal by his players.
He then approached the SuperSport crew on the touchline and demanded an instant replay to view the incident for a second time.
He was turned away by the technicians, but in classic Silva style, he did not take it lightly and began scuffling with the SuperSport crew.
During last week’s derby against CAPS United, he was given his marching orders after confronting the fourth official.
And Mubaiwa told the media that Silva would be in charge in the match against Hwange FC at the Colliery this weekend!
This is despite a three-match ultimatum the club executive issued to the embattled Portuguese gaffer.
Already the coach has failed to deliver and it is surprising that Mubaiwa still clings on to the out of sorts coach when everything is pointing to a season of instability for the adored Harare giants.
History has shown that situations as the one prevailing at Dynamos have been the tonic for the ever lurking vultures to pounce on.
Mubaiwa must learn from his predecessors who bore the brunt of angry fans and those who claim to own the club.
Silva is going to destabilise the club.
Dynamos has over the decades evolved into the embodiment of Zimbabwe’s domestic football, the face of quality soccer on the local scene.
The club doesn’t deserve this.
The fans don’t deserve this.
The media and the PSL don’t deserve this.
Neither do the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and the entire sporting fraternity.
Many will remember the infamous split in 1992 after Morrison Sifelani beat Jokoniah Nhekairo to the chairmanship position.
In 2004 the situation was the same again.
It got worse in 2006 when almost the whole team left and the club had to start all over again.
In 2011, it again happened as the usual suspects, driven by greed, selfishness and arrogance destabilised the club.
With the Silva fiasco still at play, it will not be a surprise, to see dark shadows emerging from the woods.
