In defense of liberation legacy

CUSTODIANS of the Legacy Trust an organisation made up of the sons and daughters of Zimbabwe’s war veterans will hold an inaugural three-day conference at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) gardens this weekend.
The conference will run under the theme ‘Upholding the Legacy’.
Founded in 2010, Custodians of the Legacy Trust consists of a group of descendants of national liberation war heroes whose objective is to defend, promote and preserve the legacy of liberators of the country.
The vice-chairman of the trust, Pedzisai Urimbo, said various issues mostly to do with empowerment will be discussed.
“The conference is meant to update and create a calendar of events in different areas,” said Urimbo.
“We are moving away from the norm of borrowing and therefore our main thrust is to empower and conscientise all youths through various educational, social, economical and political structures.”
Urimbo said that although their fathers and mothers fought for the country without expectations of monetary gains, the livelihood of their children must improve.
He said the trust will uphold the legacy by engaging youths by discussing the fundamentals of the liberation struggle.
Urimbo said the conference this weekend was a precursor to future gatherings, seminars and research aimed at upholding the legacy of liberation fighters.
“The Zimbabwe National Army is helping us in researching and we are approaching war veterans and other researchers to assist in telling the story of the liberation struggle,” he said.
The Patriot has it on record that the conference will also look at issues to do with inheritance of the legacy, youth empowerment and how youths can take advantage of the Zim-ASSET blueprint and benefit from it.
A tour of the National Heroes will be conducted during the three- day conference.
The Custodians of the Legacy Trust has seven board members and eight Trustees that participated in the liberation struggle.
The trust desires to preserve and consolidate independence in all its forms and to build a united, aggressive and permanent political social order with roots firmly embedded in the liberation struggle.
