Independence: Lest we forget!

Published on

EDITOR – INDEPENDENCE celebrations are upon us and April 18 should be an unforgettable day on our calendar.
It is the day the Union Jack was lowered while our very own Zimbabwean flag was raised in Rufaro Stadium.
Bob Marley even graced this famous day on April 18 1980.
As we celebrate our independence lest we forget the injustices we faced at the hands of our former colonisers and let us all remember that our independence was hard-won.
Yes we were made third class citizens in our very own motherland.
We were abused, terrorised, tormented and killed by imperialists who travelled for thousands of miles to come here and squander our resources.
Sometimes when I think about it, I get so angry.
We were regarded as worse than animals in our own land.
We grew up in Tribal Trust Lands, we paid all sorts of taxes including dog tax and we were ridden like horses everyday by the same people who now make so much noise about human rights.
We must never forget such cruelty and injustice.
Yes we may forgive, but we must always remember to remind our former colonisers that it is their cruelty that made us revolt and rightfully fight for our independence.
Our children must know why we fought for our independence and from who.
So as we get ready to celebrate our independence, lest we forget where we came from and that precious blood was spilt for this beautiful land we call Zimbabwe. Rhodesia is gone and will never return.
