Irrigation infrastructure vital

Published on

EDITOR — I write to your esteemed newspaper to proffer some solutions which I am certain, if followed, may be useful in the revival of the agriculture sector.
We are faced with a serious drought which may affect our efforts to make our agriculture sector more viable.
Government, through President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has announced plans by his administration to put 200 hectares under irrigation in each district.
What this means is that we will have more than 12 000ha under irrigation countrywide.
This projection has scope for improvement, meaning if we expand the area under irrigation we can easily get to 120 000 hectares under irrigation.
This needs sophisticated planning and creativity.
What boggles the mind is that we have many dams, reservoirs and catchment areas that have unfortunately not been made use of.
In the same vein, we have vast tracts of land which can be used for irrigation.
Now, what does this mean for Zimbabwe?
If we make use of the dams, we can survive on irrigation in the next five to 10 years without having to rely on the rains.
We can make use of bio-powered digesters to fire our irrigation.
This will save the country a lot in terms of power which is needed to propel our agriculture to greater heights.
