Jubilation and agony on Super Sunday … as PSL curtain comes down

THE Castle Premier Soccer League (PSL) curtain comes down on Super Sunday with results of at least nine games having a crucial effect on the final log standings.
Any of Harare City, Dynamos and Highlanders can emerge the PSL champions by the end of the day.
The three are separated at the top by just two points.
On the other other hand, Black Rhinos, Buffaloes, Black Mambas, Hwange, Triangle FC or Shabanie Mine can join Tripple B, Motor Action and Monomotapa as the fourth relegated team.
These six who are just above the relegation zone are separated by a mere three points.
At the top, Harare City have the advantage of holding the fate of their destiny in their own hands.
If the Sunshine Boys as Harare City are affectionately known continue from where they left off on Sunday when they massacred Bosso 4-0, then CAPS United their opponents on Sunday, might stand no chance.
If that happens then the Bigboy Mawiwi side will win the championship in their second season in the Premier League.
But they should not expect Kepekepe to hand them the championship on a platter as the Twine Phiri-owned side would like to end the season among the top four.
But CAPS might be lucky because City’s creative midfielder Silas Songani, who looks keen to have his name stand out prominently on the 2014 Soccer Stars of the Year calendar will not be eligible to play on Sunday after accumilating three yellow cards. Highlanders, who like Dynamos have to rely on a number of permutations to snatch the championship, must at least beat Look Masomere’s Shabhanie Mine to have any chance.
However, a draw seems to be the most likely result against a Shabanie side which wants to be absolutely certain that they are safe from relegation.
Defending champions Dynamos are likely to end the season on a high note by beating a resurgent Black Mambas who are fighting for dear life.
While this result might condemn the Martin Bonongwe-coached ‘Warumwawarumwa’ to Division One, it is unlikely to help DeMbare pip the Sunshine Boys to the title.
When looking back, the Glamour Boys will rue the ‘easy’ points they surrendered especially at their favourite hunting ground, Rufaro Stadium.
Also fighting for survival is another uniformed side Black Rhinos, who, fresh from beating Hwange, are likely to sink the final nail into relegated Monomotapa’s coffin.
Rhinos’ victory might see the army side just survive the dreaded chop.
Buffaloes’ laboured for victory over former league champions Monos, might have been the Mutare side’s swansong in topflight football as they are likely to get no mercy from FC Platinum.
FC Platinum are desperate for a top four finish and their coach Llyod Mutasa is unlikely to have any sympathy with Timothy Masachi, the coach of his hometown based team.
Hwange have blown hot and cold throughout the whole season, but First Division bound Motor Action should this time expect a red hot Chipangano to be firing on all cylinders.
Victory for Hwange should ensure that visits by the Premier League clubs to the colliery cauldron will continue next season.
Outspoken Triangle coach Gishon Ntini, could recover from the Bulawayo shock, where his nine-man team were beaten by Highlanders in a game with a record breaking 16 minutes of added time.
A win over visiting Chicken Inn will ensure that Triangle will have another dance with Premier League football next season.
But to make sure Triangle do not end with gloomy faces on home ground, they have to take care of Chicken Inn talisman Tendai Ndoro, the Premier League’s leading marksman.
Mbada Diamonds Cup finalists How Mine are likely to parade their old war horses, who include Ephraim Mazarura, Herbert Dick and Gilbert Banda when they take on wooden spoon candidates Tripple B.
‘Chikurupati’ should win this game easily, which they are going to use as one of their training sessions before the Mbada Diamonds final against Highlanders in Bulawayo next Saturday.
By the end of the day on Super Sunday, I can foresee jubilation in the Harare City camp and agony at Thomlinson Depot.
