Lesson from Malawi

Published on

EDITOR – I am writing this from Malawi where I am working. Recently the President of this country deported Britain’s ambassador to Malawi. The fallout has seen the freezing of donor support from a number of organisations. I was so surprised by the reactions of Malawians. They are all agreed that with no donor money, it will be gloom and doom in Malawi. Even the zero deficit budget just unveiled is getting a lot of attack. All this reminded me of your article where you mention the ‘social welfare case’. It beats me that a country wants comfort from borrowed resources. The situation has also shown how the Western world is united even if you are only in conflict with one member country. Is unity of purpose achievable in the Southern African Development Community, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa or even in the African Union? Take care Itayi Malawi
