‘Magaya not a Warriors legend’

Published on

EDITOR – A FEW months ago I remember The Patriot publishing a story that warned ZIFA president Dr Philip Chiyangwa against being held to ransom by pseudo sponsors who have sinister agendas.
The Warriors legends match against Spanish football giants FC Barcelona on Sunday proved why local soccer is indeed in trouble.
I am trying to understand why and how PHD leader Walter Magaya out of the blue became a Warriors legend?
We are a serious nation which has been renowned for standing by its principles and these principles include, among others, embarking on the Land Reform and Resettlement Programme and the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Programme.
We have also redefined what Africanism is all about and should be about as espoused by some of Africa’s finest thinkers and philosophers like Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere and Kenneth Kaunda, to mention but a few.
I listened in horror as the match commentators showered Magaya with all sorts of praises and made him the hero that he is not.
It is true that Magaya has made significant contributions to the Warriors’ cause in particular and to football development in general, but that should and can never take away the fact that he is not in any way a Warriors legend.
There are many people who have supported the Warriors and football in Zimbabwe, but they have never imposed themselves on the local game.
They know their station and do not transcend into being godfathers of the local game.
Let’s keep the local game from greedy vultures who want to make a name for themselves.
And let us not make fools of ourselves just because of money.
Magaya is not a Warriors legend and will never be.
In fact, both Magaya and Chiyangwa spoiled my beautiful Sunday.
