Mai Mugabe turns unifier

WHEN ZANU PF Women’s League political commissar Dr Olivia Muchena told the gathering that the First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe’s speech at the City Sports Centre contained a surprise, few predicted there would be a pact that would redefine the course of the ruling party.
By the time the First Lady finished her speech, history had been made.
She touched the contentious issue of factionalism in the ruling party, playing the role of unifier between internecine parties.
Not only did she show her mettle by unifying these parties, she extended a hand of reconciliation to the embattled ZANU PF Harare South legislator Shadreck Mashayamombe who made headlines a few weeks ago.
In her all-embracing address to the 20 000 strong crowd, the First Lady said there was need to embrace the spirit of forgiveness among ZANU PF members in order to eradicate factionalism that has threatened to affect the operations of the party, particularly delivery of electoral promises.
Since the beginning of the year, the party has been riddled by in-fights with top officials attacking each other in the local media and at various fora.
These in-fights were spilling into the lower structures of the party where the bigwigs were reportedly paying people to support them and disregard their rivals a situation that has led to many divisions in the party.
The First Lady urged party officials to bury the hatchet and reunite to fulfil the promises that were made by ZANU PF during last year’s harmonised elections.
The party resoundingly won the polls because of its attractive election manifesto that seeks to revive the country’s economy, creating more than 5 000 jobs and improving social delivery services among others.
“Tiri pano tese nekuda kweboka rinonzi ZANU PF,” said Amai Mugabe.
“Tinokanganisirana asi ndirikukumbira kuti spirit yeforgiveness ive pamberi pedu.
“Hatingangove party iri good at making promises, we must fulfil those promises.
“We went to elections telling people that we would do one, two, three, let us do that. That is what makes people say here is a party that we will support.
“Other than that, it will be difficult in the next election.
“Let us not take people for granted.”
It has become a norm in the party that fighting officials fail to openly resolve their differences and continue to attack each other through gossips.
However, the Harare rally came as a blessing to the ZANU PF leadership and the rest of its supporters in the province as Dr. Mugabe solved the party differences publicly not secretly as in most cases but to call a spade a spade on the differences between the involved officials.
Amai Mugabe who left Mashayamombe in great shock as he could not believe the generosity of the First Lady, said the party could only succeed if there is unity among its members.
This is the message that the rest of the party leaders and supporters should follow to ensure smooth running of the party.
It is the same spirit that was embraced by liberation war fighters during the revolutionary war that led to the birth of new Zimbabwe.
ZANU PF should therefore, continue to safeguard and uphold the spirit of unity and forgiveness that contributed to the defeat of colonial forces which we continue to fight in present day.
Factionalism is a political disease that needs to be cured as it might develop into a cancer that could be difficult to heal and weaken the party.
Amai Mugabe continues to receive overwhelming support from party supporters during her Meet The People rallies as the Harare venue was filled to capacity with thousands more people failing to gain entry due to the size of the place.
