Mixed feelings to Dube poll victory

Published on

THE Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) will be led by Cuthbert Dube for the next four years and his re-election has attracted mixed feelings from soccer analysts, administrators and fans.
Dube won by a landslide in last weekend’s polls beating three other candidates, Nigel Munyati, Leslie Gwindi and Trevor Carelse-Juul.
Dube garnered 34 votes while Juul secured 14.
Gwindi and Munyati polled 10 and zero votes respectively.
The president has to secure a two thirds majority of the votes, therefore Dube and Juul squared-off in the second round.
Dube got 44 votes while Trevor Carelse-Juul polled 14 in the second round of voting.
Omega Sibanda beat Elkana Scott Dube for the vice-president post while John Phiri, Fungai Chihuri, Tavengwa Hara and Bernard Gwarada were elected board members.
A total of 58 members voted and this included the Premier Soccer League teams who voted for the first time.
While continuity is good in every organisation, the election of Dube has had mixed connotations.
It’s the board led by Dube that brought the Asiagate scandal which has become a laughing stock in football.
The suspensions were not endorsed by FIFA while the image of the players and officials was tainted.
Some lost their jobs like Norman Mapeza and Joey Antipas.
The two were coaches of the national team.
A total of six coaches were appointed during Dube’s first term in office.
The question now is are we going to see more coaches during his second term or Ian Gorowa will stay put?
There are several projects Dube says he would love to see through.
Above all, the football world likes to see success.
The soccer fan expects to see the national team qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations, the World Cup and other tournaments.
During his term there are several positives that the former PSMAS CEO made. Progress at the ZIFA Village which has a conference room, soccer pitch (artificial turf) and lodgings was his the biggest achievement.
Apart from the hiring and firing of the national team coaches, the Warriors now ranked just below 100 scored remarkable success in the CHAN tournament, while women’s football has been revived.
In his manifesto, Dube said he shall make sure a new office to house ZIFA will be built along Airport Road together with a hotel
to generate money for the association.
While it was a rosy document, his 2010 manifesto still has a lot of unfinished business.
Sponsorship of the national team remained a major problem for the football fraternity in the country.
Now the task is upon the man in charge of football to deliver.
Soccer fans hope that the national team’s failure to travel will be a thing of the past as sponsors will chip in.
It remains to be seen if the corporate world will come and sponsor football with Dube at the helm, a man who is viewed as a typical example of bad corporate governance.
