Picky adds flavour to Tuku’s ‘comeback’ show

Published on

IT was all thrills and no spills at Oliver Mtukudzi’s Greatest Hits Concert at the Harare International Conference Centre last week.
Come backs have not always made great stories, many have been disastrous.
An absence in the boxing ring for years dulled Mohamed Ali’s sting making his return to the sport in the 80s a sorry sight, Formula One ace Michael Schumacher, with over seven world F1 championships to his name, on returning to the tarmac realised that he had lost his sure footedness on the pedals.
The list of those who should never have attempted to re-live past glories is endless.
The Greatest Hits Concert was preceded by an impressive hype and advertising campaign, it was well promoted, it promised a comeback albeit a temporary one but still a comeback of Picky Kasamba.
The concert lived to its billing.
And it not only had Picky been making a comeback but John Muyambo, popularly known as Chibhodhoro, too.
And the two artistes, Chobhodhoro and Tuku’s ‘twin-brother’ Picky Kasamba stood out in the music bonanza.
Their comeback did not disappoint.
Chibhodhoro, who is part of Tanga WekwaSando who is making a comeback in the industry, after a long hiatus, mesmerised.
Picky who officially retired from the Black Spirits almost a decade ago dazzled, never setting a foot wrong or missing a step.
During Tanga WekwaSando’s performance Chibhodhoro delighted.
It was at the moment when every instrument went on pause giving Chibhodhoro the opportunity to do what he knows best with the drums, that the performer showed that his skills have not diminished.
Many held their breath.
In the years gone by many would have automatically started clapping in anticipation of a treat that never failed to tickle even the hardest of critics.
But this time around the crowd did not know what to expect.
Many were seeing him for the first time after the artiste’s long spell off the stage.
And the performer whose act has always been spiced with comic acts is no longer a young man.
But what a show he put up.
The whole auditorium did not move, the silence was deafening but was rend to shreds the short artiste’s hands began pummelling the drums delivering a performance as tall as a tree whose upper most leaves can only be accessed by a giraffe.
The performance was that tall.
The crowd was transfixed and transported into a realm that Chibhodhoro ruled.
It has been said there is a fire within every performer that can only be extinguished by the wear and tear of a lengthy career.
But Chibhodhoro proved that there are exceptions, that there are artistes whose fire never dies.
He left the stage while the fans still wanted more.
And it was at 1: 15 that the demanding crowd realised that the comeback story would be about beauty and sheer brilliance.
As Picky did the famous leaping dance, which has been immortalised on the Tuku Music logo, with Tuku many were spellbound.
At 1: 17 dancing to Right Direction, Picky exhibited the energy of one who has not been softened by inactivity but still very much into the game.
As the whole outfit, the Black Spirits, did the uwiiiii-hai-kacha-kacha dance, imitating a train in motion, Picky missed not a step, the train did not derail, was in no danger of derailing.
At 1: 24 sweat began falling off Picky and many probably thought uahaa, fatigue was creeping in.
Whoever had that thought was wrong.
He continued to leap and prance about the stage, it looked like he could not stop.
There was a glow about Tuku, one we have not seen in a long time.
It seemed Picky energised him.
By 1: 34 dancing to Munoshusha, Picky showed that he was no spent force, he easily kept up with Tuku’s outfit made up mostly of youths.
At 2: 19 Picky grabbed his towel, saluted the fans and walked off the stage.
