Prophets: ‘Time we open our eyes’

IT is sad to note that as much as Christianity, like other religions, preaches love, it is not through love that it has dominated the world.
Although the Bible teaches love, it was used as a tool to steal land from Africans and plunder the continent’s wealth in the name of Jesus Christ.
I am positive this is not Jesus Christ’s wish but that of greedy men with an insatiable hunger for world domination.
By using the Bible as a diversion from their actual goal (of accumulating riches and wealth by whichever means necessary), they managed to hoodwink the world into making it think and believe that they truly were ‘holy’ people concerned with the preservation of mankind when in actual fact, they were after the diamonds and gold of Africa and the oil of the Arab nations.
There is not much difference between today’s so-called ‘prophets’ and these Western countries that abused the Bible for personal gain.
What is even sadder is the fact that there are still so many people who are falling for these tricks, just like so many Africans believe more in the US than their own countries.
We should learn to question these abnormal things.
Were we always like this?
Were we always this hungry for money?
What of the spirit mediums we went to, to seek guidance from?
Did they always ask one to come bearing big expensive gifts or money in order for them to speak on behalf of the spirit realm or God?
Or are we confused as to who God truly is?
There is always a need for us to venture back in history to get a full understanding of our position today and also for us to move forward with liberated minds.
Black people have always been spiritual, dating back to pre-colonial times.
We took matters of the spirit very seriously and had respect for one another, holding dear all life.
We had spirit mediums like Mbuya Nehanda and Sekuru Kaguvi who could see into the spiritual realm in pretty much the same manner as the prophets of the Old Testament and like Samuel and Elijah, they spoke on behalf of the country.
Never were they called evil then, but rather they were the voices of God, Mwari as known by the people.
They were esteemed characters who led by example and lived according to cultural beliefs that put life ahead of wealth and riches accumulation.
Money was never mentioned as an emphasis in their lives like some of the prophets we see today and in that you will find that the Old Testament prophets and the spirit mediums of Zimbabwe were very much alike.
We also know that Mbuya Nehanda conducted rain–asking ceremonies so that the people produced good yields.
And she never demanded payment for her services to her people.
Chaminuka was also a powerful prophet.
He prophesied the coming of Europeans and King Lobengula’s eventual defeat by the European army: “Kuchauya vasina mabvi vachakunda pfumo remadzviti,” the spirit is said to have proclaimed.
Less than a decade later, the Pioneer Column arrived after the British South Africa Company (BSAC) had annexed Mashonaland as a British colony.
This act eventually led to the Anglo-Ndebele War of 1893 during which King Lobengula’s forces were eventually defeated despite their gallantry.
He was a powerful prophet and no charlatan.
And never once in narrations about this great leader do we hear of him abusing the people.
Chaminuka the miracle worker, healer, arbiter, a man who could communicate with Musikavanhu (God) used his powers to serve the community and not milk it dry.
Our people fully appreciated their religious leaders, but were never helpless pawns.
African Traditional Religion (ATR) was premised on logic and was never irrational.
The religion did not break or separate families.
It was a religion that bonded people together and did not create demi-gods.
The prophets and prophetesses never took the place of God.
Today’s so-called ‘men-of-God’ have no qualms playing God Himself.
And they are more interested in accumulating wealth rather than saving souls.
Day-in-day-out we are being exposed to ludicrous claims by these charlatans whose teachings every day veer off the Bible teachings which must guide them.
It is time our people become serious and stop giving these charlatans credibility.
Let us open our eyes!
