EDITOR — Behind the economic challenges facing the country is a story that many are not paying attention to.
It is the story of the talent that has emerged in the country’s topflight soccer league.
Since I started following soccer in Zimbabwe, about three decades ago, I don’t recall witnessing a race for championship honours as stiff as this year’s.
And the beauty of it is that teams from outside Harare and Bulawayo are pursuing top honours.
What this means, Editor, is that talent is all over the country.
Back in the day, it used to be Dynamos, CAPS United and Highlanders that dominated the league but with the emergence of the likes of FC Platinum, Ngezi Platinum and Chicken Inn, that stranglehold has been broken.
Also consider the number of players we have lost to other leagues, especially in South Africa, that is when you see that Zimbabwe is replete with raw football talent that needs to be unearthed and nurtured.
I have also been impressed by the standard of play which, I believe if properly handled and supported, can result in Zimbabwe winning the African Cup of Nations Tournament in the coming years.
We can qualify for the World Cup and cause a stir there.
It is high time our football agents looked beyond South Africa and send our players straight to Europe and other competitive leagues.
Keep the standards up.
Elias,
South Africa.
