Regional integration Zimbabwe’s future

Published on

THERE is a sad story that happened last week.

This story, a reflection of the pernicious situation we find ourselves in as a country, revolved around Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi’s visit to Zimbabwe last week.

It also centred on the purpose of the said visit.

In the same vein, it was the deals and the engagement that President Masisi came to endorse in our beloved country.

Equally compelling were the aspersions that were cast by those from the political divide and how they sought to diminish the impact of that historic visit.

Going by the foresaid, our country is in a serious logjam that needs to be unlocked as a matter urgency.

It is that logjam that is being used by the country’s detractors to paint a picture of a crisis there never is; a crisis that would never be.

But the crisis that this country has been alleged to be in is only found in certain politicians and several people’s imaginations.

A crisis cannot, and will never, be borne out of those characters’ inane anger or lack thereof.

It can never be founded on their misplaced mischief.

This country is moving forward; headed for a destiny that will bring together the people of this country as one people.

This is one of the fundamental aspirations of the liberation struggle; a people bound by love and unity for their country.

A people glued by the common goal of developing their beloved country as a solid entity.

A people brought together by the common good of their country.

A people spurred by the desire to see a future of more and plenty for generations to come.

A people inspired by the collective objective of making this country great again.

And, yes, we are a great nation!

We will achieve that greatness through unity.

That greatness will be on the goals, ideals and values of patriotism.

I talk about patriotism because this is an issue that has been maligned by those who are yet to be imbued with the values of the same.

How do we move forward when we have some in our midst who anticipate failure and doom for their country?

How do we move forward when we have some in our midst who celebrate the demise of their country?

How do we move forward when some mistake their hatred for certain political parties for that of their country?

The celebrations over reports that Botswana had ‘denied’ that it was not going extend any lines of credit to Harare are a clear pointer towards the above raised narrative.

We will not delve much into that narrative because, by now, the country and the world are now aware that a line of credit was indeed extended to Zimbabwe for the revival of the productive sector.

That is an issue for another day.

What is critical is that the country’s regional integration thrust is gaining traction with our neighbouring brothers and sisters.

This thrust is being embraced by the continent.

The world, too, has refused to be left out in this exciting jamboree.

They know and appreciate that Zimbabwe is a key player in global political economics.

Let us all embrace that endorsement.

Yes, together we can make it!
