Robert Mugabe: A man defined by more than his status

Published on

ONE would think that with the acres of paper and words that have been devoted to vilifying the man and tonnes of paint that have painted him a monster his true image is by now long lost.
But nevertheless, he remains a man seen for what he truly is, he has stood out, and tall too, the tonnes of filth heaped on him has failed to bury him so-to-speak.
We do not wax lyrical about this figure in our midst and neither do we pretend not to see what he is.
He has been accused of rigging elections by the West, it does not matter that not only a huge number in this country, but elsewhere love him to bits.
Did Mugabe rig elections to become the First Deputy Chair of the African Bureau, the Supreme Organ of the African Union (AU), which is tasked with steering the agenda of the organisation with the assistance of the AU Commission.
We are not talking about an ordinary post here.
The organ gives direction on functions and operations of the AU.
Did Mugabe rig this election?
The West must answer this question.
Africa, just as Zimbabweans have always done, see his value.
Obviously Mugabe, though handsome and charming, is loved more for what he represents and stands for.
Zimbabwe has become a template that Africa can look up to, a template that the West wants to destroy to protect its interests across the continent.
The Zimbabwean struggle is an African struggle and that is a song we have always sung, a song that we will never tire of singing, we will sing it to the end of time.
Africa chose Mugabe to be among its leading voices because his is a voice that has not faded or wavered when it comes to what it means to be an African, when it comes to enunciating the needs of the continent, when it comes to asserting the rights and demands of the continent.
Mugabe is and remains a shining beacon among African leaders.
The country he leads has championed African solidarity and is showing the rest of the continent that it can be done.
When guns were blazing to dislodge vasinamabvi, we would sing about African unity.
We did not start yesterday to talk about African solidarity, African unity.
It is written in our blood, in our sweat and in our bones.
We have seen vasinamabvi for who they are, not as an independent entity just trying to survive, but a figment of the British imperialism and Western hegemony.
The election of Mugabe vindicates us.
The choosing of a strong voice and principled representative shows Africa is beginning to see and accept what we have all along seen, the evilness of the Obama-Cameron Axis.
Africa like we have always said is in need of strong leadership to address its myriad problems.
Our problems have not been as a result of a lack of resources for we have those in abundance.
Our problems have persisted as a result of failure to unite and fight for a common cause as a continent.
But with a man like Mugabe, from Zimbabwe, among those steering the continent into the future we have a shot at improving our fortunes.
Vasinamabvi will always dislike those that for their identity and independence.
So we will continue to sing the song ‘ruzhinji rweAfrica dai tachibatana kupedza hutongi hwemarudzi ekunze’.
