Sevens tourney roars into life

Published on

FIVE countries are participating in this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Sevens tournament starting this Friday at Harare Sports Club.
Neighbours South Africa, Georgia, Hong Kong, Kenya and Russia join teams from the hosts Zimbabwe, the Cheetahs and Goshwaks.
Russia has sent two teams while Zimbabwe will field the Cheetahs and the developmental side, the Goshwaks.
Zambia are the only absentee from the list of countries that participated in last year’s edition, but Russia replaced Zimbabwe’s northern neighbours.
After the inaugural launch of the tournament in 2012, its popularity continues to grow.
Thousands of rugby enthusiasts throng Harare Sports Club during the two-day jamboree.
Zimbabwe’s Cheetahs will be captained by seasoned skipper Jacques Leitao and will be supported by several experienced players.
Tangai Nemadire, Gardner Nechironga, Fortune Chipendo and Tafadzwa Chitokwindo are some of the players who have seen it all in rugby for the national team.
The Cheetahs and Goshwaks have more to gain from the tournament.
The visiting nations, save for Kenya, are ranked better on the IRB World rankings.
Zimbabwe are ranked 30 while Kenya are on 34.
Hong-Kong are on 25, while Russia and Georgia occupy positions 19 and 16 respectively.
South Africa are on second position and are expected to be the most competitive side at the two day tournament.
Zimbabweans will have more to learn from the visitors and have everything to play for in the tournament.
Some pearls have been discovered at the previous tournaments.
The tournament provides international exposure to the Goshawks who will be weaned into the senior men’s side, the Cheetahs.
