THE Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe (CBZ Holdings) recently donated traffic equipment to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Harare traffic department.
During a hand over/take over ceremony held at Morris Depot in Harare, Cde Chihuri expressed gratitude to CBZ Holdings.
“The equipment, which comprises of 500 traffic vests, 500 raincoats, 30 intersection traffic centre boxes and five Yamaha 125cc motor bikes is aimed at regulating the increasing number of vehicles in the country,” said ZRP Commissioner-General, Augustine Chihuri.
“As the ZRP we are deeply humbled by your gesture which will no doubt go a long way in stretching our fight against crime and in particular our law enforcement traffic operations.
“Such a shot in the arm could not have come at a better time especially with the heavy congestion of both vehicle and pedestrian population in the city. The equipment, said Comm-Gen Chihuri, will increase the force’s efficiency.
“I assure you that the Traffic Unit will fully utilise this invaluable kit in its determined endeavour to tame the traffic jungle,” he said.
“More importantly, it is through collective efforts such as these that the ZRP in partnership with other key stakeholders particularly local authorities, Zimbabwe Traffic Safety Council and the Vehicle Inspection Department will be able to manage and ensure the smooth flow of traffic in the Central Business District (CBD) that is of late experiencing a lot of congestion during the peak hours.”
The managing director of CBZ Holdings, Peter Zimunya said it was the duty of various stakeholders to assist the police force.
“We are proud to be partnering with the ZRP Traffic Control Department so that we ensure that order is maintained in the CBD,” said Zimunya.
Meanwhile, Cde Chihuri said the force will not decrease its roadblocks as they were part of operations to maintain peace and order.
He said last year the traffic department had managed to reduce accidents and the death toll on the roads by half as a result of the roadblocks.
