EDITOR – I WAS so disturbed by the death of 25 people and 46 others who were seriously injured when a ZUPCO bus heading for Mutoko and a Unifreight bus travelling to Harare side-swiped along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway over the weekend.
Eye-witnesses have attributed the accident to speeding by both drivers.
Public transport is the main mode of commuting by many Zimbabweans due to its affordability and flexibility.
Therefore, these transport operators should always bear that they are entrusted with people’s lives and
they should take every precaution and cautious measures to avoid such tragedy.
Most public transport operators have a tendency of putting the lives of people at risk by breaching road regulations such as speeding.
This will be just for them to reach to their destinations early and to pick more passengers at bus stops before other operators in a bid to maximise profits at the same time ignoring the safety of people on board.
Public transport operators should value people’s lives than money.
My appeal to public service vehicle drivers is for them to adhere to speed limits and other road signs to save the lives of people.
