Talent search to promote more artistes

ONE of Zimbabwe’s biggest music promoters, Partson Chimboza of Chipaz Promotions has embarked on a programme of giving back to the community through an intensive talent search in the dancehall genre which took centre stage in the music fraternity last year.
The talent search, which is set for this weekend, is now in its final stages and will see about 300 registered artistes from around Zimbabwe clash at Plaza de Castallica in Greencroft, Harare.
From the talent search, only 20 talented artistes will be selected to share the stage with veteran artistes in the fast rising genre at a show slated for Harare Gardens next month.
Speaking to Patriot Arts this week, Chimboza said he wants to continue to identify and promote new talent from different people in Zimbabwe.
“The talent search is a nationwide event that has aspiring artistes from Bulawayo, Mutare and Chegutu,” Chimboza said.
“During the past years we have looked at other genres resulting in the crop of artistes such as Freddy Manjalima, better known as Kapfupi and many others.
“As Chipaz Promotions, dancehall is another genre that we are just paying attention to.”
Chimboza said the search for new talent is divided into different categories that include the under 16s, over 16s and a female category.
An award winning music promoter, Chimboza said he is holding the talent search in the hope that he will identify and open avenues for both female and male aspiring and talented artistes in Zimbabwe.
Dancehall is a genre that is fast growing in the industry.
The genre has opened avenues for many artistes, particularly from the ghetto.
Most artistes in the genre have focused on themes that touch on their day to-day lives.
It is through the helping hand of Chimboza that artistes such as Kapfupi and the late Tongai Moyo rose to become forces to reckon with in the sungura genre.
Some like the talented contemporary reggae maestro, Jah Prayzah and Sulumani Chimbetu also rose through Chipaz Promotions.
Chimboza is one promoter who has been able to put local artistes on the map opening avenues for them to be known in and out of the country.
It is through the input of music promoters that artistes are able to hold shows and spread out their music.
Apart from promoting music Chimboza is well known for organising and hosting annual charity soccer matches to help disadvantaged artistes in the industry.
