The people have spoken

Published on

AS we reflect on the events before and after the just-ended ZANU PF National People’s Congress in Harare, one thing which stands out is that, the organisation is a people’s party.
The enthusiastic involvement of the people in determining how they want their party to be managed was there for all to see.
Suddenly the people realised it was the ideological richness of their leaders and not how much money their leaders were prepared to pay them to be assured of their support.
After all, cash is perishable whereas ideological guidelines are eternal.
And indeed, the task of the party leader to select the Politburo or Cabinet becomes much simpler.
That is the position ZANU PF is in at the moment.
Without fear or favour, through people’s power those perceived to be divisive and/or corrupt were rejected.
High positions in the outgoing Politburo or Cabinet alone were not enough to guarantee acceptance by the people.
Thus people like former Vice-President Joice Mujuru and Secretary for Administration in the Politburo Cde Didymus Mutasa were reduced to mere card -carrying members.
What has been reaffirmed is that in ZANU PF no one is untouchable as the party belongs to the people.
President Mugabe has wasted no time in picking the team to lead the people both in Government and party from the pool he was given by the people at the 6th National People’s Congress.
In his selection he has reaffirmed the people’s assertion that no one is indispensable.
We take this opportunity to congratulate Cde Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and Cde Phelekezela Mphoko for being appointed to the posts of party and Government Vice-Presidents.
The people know what they want as demonstrated by the poll results of July 31 2013.
The trimmed Politburo team should go straight into business in making sure that the party guidelines which led to the July 31 2013 landslide are adhered to.
The Politburo as the highest decision making body in between Congresses, means incumbents must be prepared to sacrifice for the good of the party and not for self-aggrandisement.
Never again should we have party leaders who would devote their energies on how best to wrest power from legitimate leaders unconstitutionally.
After all, it is now less than four years before the electorate is given another chance in a general election.
The new-look ZANU PF leadership, a direct result of the people’s wishes and endorsed by their First Secretary and President, Cde Mugabe, is expected to offer a united front in preparing the ground for another convincing electoral victory in 2018.
Why not.
That is provided the new-look leadership will redouble its effort to make sure the economic blue print, Zim-ASSET, bears fruit.
Previous efforts by ZANU PF to bring happiness to the greatest number of people were sabotaged by the MDC during the days of the Inclusive Government.
This continued after July 31 2013 as corrupt elements within ZANU PF were more interested in seeing the downfall of President Mugabe.
That is no more.
The new leadership must live up to the people’s expectations, who abhor corruption and expect an upliftment of their standards of life.
The President has promised prosecution for all those proved to be involved in corruption.
The people are watching and eager to exercise their democratic right at the appropriate time to choose leaders who conform to their expectations.
In the meantime, the 6th ZANU PF National People’s Congress is over and the people have spoken.
They are ready to speak again.
