The waffling Wharton of the United States!

Published on

THIS article is a follow-up on the testy exchanges between Tichaona Zindoga, who writes for one of our dailies, and a certain Mr Bruce Wharton, who also happens to be the current American ambassador to Zimbabwe.
The good ambassador decided not to respond to a set of simple questions seeking clarification on the relationship between Zimbabwe and the USA.
More specifically clarification on the economic sanctions imposed by the mighty USA on Zimbabwe, tiny as it is!
“I am sorry to have disappointed you with my decision not to respond to your questions…I feel no obligation in engaging in a conversation that perpetuates the story that your set of questions implied….Blaming external reasons for Zimbabwe’s situation or its future simply does not withstand critical analysis…Your questions were framed around the proposition that Zimbabwe has little responsibility for either its current status or its future, and that the main forces at play in Zimbabwe are outside forces.”
The question is: if Wharton is unwilling to help us understand the kind of logic which informs the deeds of a super power that America is who else is there to help us?
If that person is there somewhere in Zimbabwe can he or she explain the nature of the crime which we committed against America better than an ambassador whose official duty is to do exactly what Zindoga is asking him to do?
Some of us regard freedom of speech as being critical in bringing about better understanding between peoples, between different cultures and nations!
So when questions are raised before ambassadors such as Wharton, do these questions have to be to the liking of the ambassador before he is obliged to answer?
Between Zindoga and Wharton, who is trying to promote better understanding between Zimbabwe and the USA through freedom of speech?
Why silence an inquiring mind by being so rude and unhelpful?
For your own understanding Mr Wharton, behind the polite request for clarification by Zindoga are 12,9 million Zimbabweans who have been waiting all these years to ask the same questions and the reason is simple: all of us do not recall any one of us committing a specific crime against the USA!
We do not understand why the USA has been punishing us by imposing economic sanctions against our country for more than 15 years!
Coming to the issue of whether it is external and or internal forces which are dominant in shaping the current and future status of Zimbabwe, we need to refer in detail to the contents of the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001!
The Act is an unprecedented catalogue of all aspects pertaining to how Zimbabwe should be run.
For instance, it focuses on how land should be distributed in Zimbabwe according to donor prescriptions, how elections should be conducted, how white settler property should be protected, how and when our armed forces should relate to our civilian government, how our media should be managed etc. And the list of prescriptions goes on and on to a point where it begins to look like a mini-constitution designed by the US Congress for Zimbabwe!
The only problem here is that the US Congress has no moral and or legal basis to legislate on anything relating to the internal affairs of Zimbabwe.
The Act is thus an illegitimate one in so far as it seeks to micro-manage our affairs on behalf of the West!
It is an Act deliberately designed to do away with our hard won independence, and our sovereignty as a nation!
What comes out loud and clear from all this is that the USA has been dabbling in our internal affairs in a deep and extensive manner for long. There is a refusal on the part of the United States to accept that Zimbabwe is an independent state entitled to retaining autonomy of its domestic space; a refusal to acknowledge Zimbabwe’s right to shape its policies both internal and external according to its being a full-fledged nation and a member of the United Nations!
A helpful confirmation of this comes from no other than Richard Dell, former American Ambassador to Zimbabwe, whose secret communication with his bosses in Washington DC became public, thanks to wikileaks!
Here is how he defined the US role in Zimbabwe in a secret report titled ‘The End is Nigh’.
“It falls to the US, once again, to take the lead, to say and do the hard things and to set the agenda…We need to keep the pressure on in order to keep Mugabe off his game and on his back foot, relying on his own shortcomings to do him in.”
The above official statement reveals to the whole world the real American agenda, not only in Zimbabwe, but all over Africa.
It is an agenda, sinister as it is, which is designed not to promote democracy and good governance but to control African politics so as to loot African resources with assistance from puppet regimes in Africa. The unfortunate part is that all major Western countries are into the same game, with the US as leader and culprit-in-chief!
In light of all the above stated evidence relating to the obscene intrusion into our internal affairs by the US in order to determine the kind of leadership that should run our country, surely the good ambassador can see that the main obstacles blocking the path to Zimbabwe’s prosperity are externally induced and American driven!
For example, in 2010 the US embassy in Harare requested 140 million dollars from US treasury as part of its strategic plan to fund its clandestine project for regime change activities in Zimbabwe!
And Dell’s confessions are all there to prove the sinister campaign that the US has been carrying out against Zimbabwe.
In such circumstances is it not therefore imperative for Zindoga to ask questions which reflect the dynamics of foreign interference in our internal affairs which the US has been spearheading all along?
What is astonishing at the same time is the yawning gap between ideals which the US proclaims on democracy and good governance and the sordid and often murderous activities which it carries out in weaker nations.
In fact it is advisable for us not to listen to the self-righteous waffling that Wharton has been doing since he came back to our country as ambassador and scrutinise closely what he is doing on the ground. His actions, not words should be our guide!
All of us now know the role played by CIA in the removal of Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana from power in 1966; we also know the role the same American organisation played in the murder of Patrice Lumumba of the Congo.
In both instances the sinister activities carried out by the US had nothing to do with democracy and good governance but more to do with greed for African resources.
In other words what the USA has been up to in Zimbabwe is part of a Western tradition to manipulate and control African politics in order to continue looting African resources!
