Tribute to those who helped liberate Zimbabwe

Published on

IT is your day Zimbabwe, your very own great moment, a most gracious day to be dressed in choicest garments, in the finest linen, a day your name shines brightest among the family of nations, for you gave birth to the brightest and the best and because of their love and sacrifice, today you sit among other nations, blessed and proud.
Today we are proud of you, we are grateful to you for each child who made Zimbabwe possible.
We are grateful for the thousands of sacrifices daily by each Zimbabwean during our day of bondage to the British armed robbers: For each mother who said: “Sorry I cannot leave my child alone” and hid a meal for the comrades on her back beneath her baby though she knew those could be her last moments.
We thank you mothers who fed and nursed that sick comrade hidden in that cave, perilously risking not only your life, but that of your family and neighbours, we appreciate you dear mothers.
For each mother who received news of her child’s death in the struggle with a heavy heart which said ‘so be it for Zimbabwe’, we are honoured and blessed.
Our fathers and grandfathers who watched their homes burned to the ground, who had their families herded into concentration camps, you, protectors of the homes, family and community, had your hearts wrenched as you helplessly watched your families destroyed, tortured and subjected to inhuman suffering and yet stood firm and courageous, you protected Zimbabwe.
We are indebted to you for your courage and relentless self-giving.
You were the pillars of the struggle, side-by-side with our dear mothers; you made it possible for the communities to stand firm behind our struggle; you did not deny us your wealth and your hospitality and you were great leaders.
We thank you, we honour you.
We are grateful to you all who risked the dangerous journey to town to bring back clothing and other supplies for the comrades; those who endlessly supplied our needs from their shops, risking life and property.
We appreciate you heroic sons and daughters of Zimbabwe.
You chimbwido, you mujibha, so tender in age and yet brave as a lion, you watched so much brutality against your family and friends, yet you died to join the liberation struggle, yet you were the unfailing messenger, the harbinger of much needed intelligence.
Zimbabwe is blessed because of you; it stands tall because of you.
Thanks to each nurse, orderly, doctor who smuggled medicines from the clinic, hospital, to help injured comrades, you saved our lives.
We are proud and grateful to each child who died at Chimoio, Nyadzonia, Pasichigare and Mkushi for the sake of Zimbabwe, you who still said, ‘all for Zimbabwe’ and never looked back as the menacing planes dropped napalm, lethal shrapnel and toxic gases; you are the brightest and the best.
For each comrade who came home injured, disabled and blamed no-one, you who still willed to serve and still be true to Zimbabwe, we salute you, we honour you.
For you comrade who after fighting for us came home and picked up the pieces, you who started school afresh, and has heroically struggled to continue to meaningfully serve Zimbabwe, you make us proud.
For you comrade who came home to find you had lost everything, even your spouse, and still remain so true to Zimbabwe, with no trace of bitterness, we salute you our great heroes.
We thank you comrade whose family was imprisoned, murdered by Smith because you fought in our liberation army and yet have continued to love and trust Zimbabwe, we salute you comrade.
And you comrade who was incarcerated, who was brutally tortured, you who were murdered for this great land, we cannot forget you.
For you comrades who died in battle, who stared death in the face, without flinching, without retreating or regretting, we thank you and honour you.
May the mountains reverberate with our ululations, songs of praise and dances of celebration.
We want to thank you lone priest, lone sister who ever secretly supported the comrades, risking reprisals from your superiors and from the brutal fascist regime of Rhodesia, we appreciate your sacrifice.
For each child of Zimbabwe who whispered a prayer for the comrades you never met, appreciating that they were fighting for everybody, we are deeply grateful.
We thank you all who lost mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, grandmothers and grandfathers, sons and daughters, uncles and aunts to our struggle, but who still sing, ‘Pamberi neZimbabwe,’ you too sacrificed so much.
For you all who still sang, ‘Tinoda Zimbabwe neupfumi hwayo hwose’, this day 36 years on, we salute you.
For you martyrs of Nyadzonia, Chimoio, Mkushi and you who were massacred in Mozambique and Zambia and all over Zimbabwe, you are the brightest beacon that shines over our land.
You founded and still defend Zimbabwe with your illustrious sacrifice; for Zimbabwe you died the harshest, most cruel deaths.
We can never thank you enough, but this day and always, we rededicate ourselves to serve the cause for which you perished.
May this great land ever be blessed, may it ever flourish for all its people because of its precious sons and daughters who sacrificed for their beloved motherland.
May Musikavanhu, Mwari, the Great God of our ancestors ever bless this land and protect it because of the love and sacrifice that graced it in its hour of need.
