Uniting the nation in time of crisis

Published on

DREADFUL and exciting events of the past few weeks have taught us so many lessons which can only be taken to heart by those of a progressive disposition.

We are still grappling, as a nation, with the recent horrors wrought by the deadly tropical Cyclone Idai.

The trail of destruction that the disaster brought to the country will be felt for many years to come.

We are in deep mourning as a people and as a country.

But one compelling aspect that has stood tall in the midst of that traumatising disaster is the unity that has been exhibited by Zimbabweans from across the board.

The efforts made by all to alleviate the suffering are highly commendable.

Through their noble gestures, they have demonstrated how unity is key to the success of any community, society and nation.

The coming together of our people clearly shows that, when united, no challenge is insurmountable.

This is evidence that if we put aside our petty differences and focus on developing our nation, we can record sustainable success.

We shall not tire delivering the message that we must all unite for the sake of development.

That all-encompassing feeling and display of unity when The Warriors dismantled Congo-Brazzaville at the giant National Sports Stadium is what we need to progress.

We should be united to defend and protect the gains of our struggle.

We should be united so that we protect our land, its abundant natural resources and its people from undue external influence.

Our resources and our land need our collective effort to extricate maximum value out of them.

This is what won us our independence.

It was unity of all our people, unity of purpose that inspired the brave young men and women to take up arms so they could bring freedom and tolerance to the people of Zimbabwe.

The battle to control and totally own our land and natural resources is far from over.

The enemy is still hovering, waiting to pounce on the slightest of opportunities.

We should be always on guard.

We should be driven by the spirit of the struggle so that we can all play our part in reviving the country’s economy.

This is why we have always said that one of the most precipitous tasks confronting President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, besides reconstructing the economy and re-engaging with the world, is uniting this nation.

It is not his task alone.

It is everyone’s duty.

But as is always the case, there are some who will never walk the same path with others.

They choose their own path, a wrong path at that.

They always choose to side with the enemy, to take advantage of people’s suffering so they can pursue nefarious political agendas.

History has always showed that these fail in their objectives.

Zimbabweans have always been forthright in the direction they prefer.

They can never, and will not, be swayed by sideshows meant to please certain masters from faraway lands.

We are masters of our destiny and we will remain like that while revelling in the unity that has been shown in the recent past.
