EDITOR – THE Highlanders supporter displaying a placard with derogatory and tribal hate language against the Shona people should be condemned in the strongest terms.
Football has fostered peace among feuding tribes, races and nations worldwide.
In Zimbabwe, football has been the biggest sport which has enjoyed a lot of support from all walks of life.
That rascal of a fan last Sunday almost spoiled the fruitful proceedings at Barbourfields Stadium.
First it was Highlanders mesmerising its loyal fans by beating Dynamos back-to-back after a 10-year spell.
Second, fans dismissed the rogue man of cloth, Evan Mawarire’s call to ‘protest’ during the match.
Surely there was a harmonious atmosphere at Emagumeni (Barbourfields Stadium).
And there comes a disturbing nuisance, with a placard denouncing the Shona as dogs.
Does this mean Highlanders soccer players who are Shona like Peter Mudhuwa, Rahman Kutsanzira and Ralph Matema, who scored the winning goal, are dogs?
Personally I think these terms, ‘Mashona and Amandebele’, should be ignored.
Zimbabweans are one people.
Yes, we may be diverse, but we are one.
While FIFA is coming up with measures to stop racism, ZIFA has so far done nothing to stop these shenanigans of tribalism, for they are not new.
FIFA deals with world issues, so ZIFA should deal with national issues.
After all, this is a national issue.
That rascal must be banned from football grounds.
Tribalism won’t take us anywhere.
