President Mugabe’s enduring legacy

Published on

WHEN talking or writing about real heroes, there is always a difficulty.

It pricks the mind and the heart, that difficulty.

There are just too many words to say.

There is so much to write about.

There too is so much to recollect, weave it into one compact piece and comb every word that is there for the taking; every word that is there to play around with.

Still the nagging difficulty persists such that sometimes you feel numb, too weak and too weary to pursue that pervasive narrative.

It is difficult to find an opening, especially where the name Robert Mugabe is now being talked about in the past tense.

Many who wrote and spoke on Friday, September 6 2019 said former President Robert Mugabe had died.

I did not agree with them.

People like former President Mugabe do not die.

They live forever with us, both in flesh and in spirit.

Once they set foot on this earth they never leave it.

They remain there, even in silence — their unwavering ideas speaking loudly to the past, present and future.

They remain there, with their voices and their silence foraging into the hearts and minds of past, present and future generations.

They influence every aspect of life.

They reverberate in all corners of the world.

They permeate every word and action that those who still speak say and take.

Former President Mugabe did not die on September 6 2019.

He took a long sleep, a long rest with his dreams revelling at the torch of the enduring flame that he lit for the world.

He took a long sleep, marvelling at the seeds of his unflinching stance towards colonialism and neo-colonialism that he fought so hard against.

The seeds are there.

The land itself does not weep for the great leader.

They swivel at their entanglement with the hoe, the pick and shovel of its real owner.

The love that former President Mugabe had for the blackman and the land is unbreakable.

It is mutual.

It is real.

It is the culmination of many years of suffering, many years of pain and tears.

That wound will never heal.

But in our land, we take comfort, we find solace and life too.

So many lessons too we take from the great man.

Former President Mugabe gave us so many things.

He gave us dignity.

He gave us land.

He delivered empowerment to a previously disadvantaged people.

That is not all.

The man bequeathed to us independence and freedom.

He taught us to rise above the racial divide.

He taught us to stand up to the unforgiving oppressors of this our great land.

He taught us to fight for what belongs to us.

He taught us to fight for our rights in an oppressive world.

He taught us to protect and defend our land.

Let us live former President Mugabe’s enduring legacy.

Let us defend our land to the bitter end.

Sleep well the icon of Africa!
