Chevrons ready for India

AFTER a 3-2 One Day International (ODI) cricket series victory away to Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe narrowly missed out on a chance to claim the one-off Test match against the hosts on Tuesday.
The Chevrons had managed to hold fort and post a high total that the hosts needed until day five to chase and win.
The hosts won the game, but Zimbabwe were also victorious as they showed they were no pushover.
Zimbabwe were on the brink of making another record after winning the ODIs away from home since 2009.
It was a sweet victory for a side whose fortunes have always been on the negative.
Zimbabwe posted 356 and 377 while the hosts responded with 346 and 391 to win the series by four wickets.
There are several positives that the Chevrons and their mentor Heath Streak can draw from the tour.
Zimbabwe left for Europe where they played Scotland and the Netherlands before connecting to Asia.
The positives that Zimbabwe witnessed in Sri Lanka are as a result of the game time they got in Europe.
The Asian tour came on the heels of the matches against Scotland and the Netherlands and continuity played a big role in Zimbabwe’s form.
The one-off test match left skipper Graeme Cremer, who scored the highest individual score, with a career best of 160 runs.
Sikandar Raza also made a career best of 127 runs off 205 balls.
The two Zimbabweans topped the list of individual scorers.
Cremer was the second wicket taker after Rangana Herath who took 11.
The Zimbabwean skipper had nine wickets, conceding 275 runs from 575 balls.
Sean Williams also made a name on the highest wicket takers’ list with four wickets from 401 deliveries.
Speaking after the loss, the Chevrons captain was disappointed with the outcome but bemoaned lack of game time on the longer version of the game.
“Bit disappointing. Credit to Sri Lanka to chase 380 on a day five pitch, it is pretty special. Credit to our guys as well. We were put under pressure in both innings early on, especially by Herath,” Cremer said.
“The guys fought and pushed Sri Lanka till the last afternoon. The guys have not played enough Test cricket, so it is hard to make decisions.
“We have learned a lot from just this one Test match. But proud of the boys. The ODI series is a high point and we brought that confidence into this Test.
“It gave us the belief that we can push big teams. Everything has been amazing from the people at the hotel, fans and the Sri Lankan team. It is one of my favourite places to visit.”
Going into day five, victory was not a given for Zimbabwe as hosts the needed 218 runs from 90 overs (540 balls) while Zimbabwe needed seven wickets to subdue the hosts.
Now that Zimbabwe’s tour of Sri Lanka is over, the hosts have little time to rest as they prepare to host India.
