Chibuku Super Cup final roars

TRIANGLE, located 125km south-east of Masvingo town, is situated in one of the seven districts of Masvingo Province — Chiredzi.
The town developed around Tongaat Huletts’ Triangle Estate. It is Zimbabwe’s second largest irrigation scheme competing with Hippo Valley Estate, established aroung Chiredzi town in the Lowveld.
The community has been predominantly occupied by the Karanga and Shangaan people.
However, intermarriages with Malawians and Zambians has resulted in the mix of ethnicities and cultures in Triangle and the Southern districts of Zimbabwe.
The majority of the town’s residents are employed by the sugar company.
Sugar cane was first planted in the region in 1931 by Thomas Murray Mcdougall but processing started in 1939.
And Triangle has a football team plying its trade in the top flight league, the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, aptly named Triangle United Football Club.
The Sugar Sugar Boys, as the team is affectionately known, usually play in white and green kits, sometimes yellow and have done so since its formation in 1972.
Chiredzi FC have been their main and local rival when they were in the ZIFA Eastern Region Division One Soccer League. They won the First Division championship in 2012 and got into the top flight in 2013.
The Chibuku Super Cup becomes the club’s highest achievement since their promotion as they are on the brink of securing their first silverware in the top flight.
Playing in the final of the fifth edition of the Chibuku Super Cup is a great achievement for the team.
Triangle will be a hive of activity tomorrow as, Gibbo, the 3 000-seater facility, hosts the country’s most prestigious tournament that comes with a ticket to represent Zimbabwe in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confedaration Cup.
The Chibuku brand colours are expected to bring business to a stand still in the Lowveld.
Former Dynamos sons Biggie Zuze and David Mandigora once coached the team but could not bring such an event to the small sugar town.
Taurai Mangwiro has exceptionally achieved the feat in his second season in charge.
Triangle coach, Mangwiro rested several of his key players in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League encounter against Dynamos at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday that ended in a goalless stalemate in preparation for the Chibuku Super Cup final tomorrow.
Dynamos was booted out of the Chibuku Super Cup by the Sugar Sugar Boys last weekend after a 2-1 win at Rufaro Stadium.
Former Dynamos player and reject, Russel Madamombe, and Lameck Nhamo got the important goals for Triangle.
Chicken Inn could not take part in this year’s edition of the Chibuku Super Cup after being banned for bringing the game into disrepute last season.
They got into trouble after causing the abandonment of the first round match against Yadah.
They protested over a late penalty awarded to their opponents.
The then coach, Rahman Gumbo, ordered players to leave the pitch, protesting over the spot kick which was awarded in the 87th minute.
According to the tournament’s rules and regulations, the club was found guilty and given a one-year ban and a fine.
Mangwiro has been credited with transforming Triangle into a more competitive side since he joined the team last season.
Should he successfully guide Triangle to the Chibuku Super Cup glory, he becomes the first coach to win it twice since its return in 2014.
The former midfield maestro won the Cup while coaching Harare City in 2015 when they beat Dynamos 2-1 in the final.
It will be good for Triangle to end the season with a piece of silverware as they have been one of the top performing teams in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
Two-time Chibuku Super Cup winners and defending champions, Harare City booked a place in the final.
Mark Harrison’s Harare City bundled Highlanders from the Chibuku Super Cup tournament on their way to the finals and are pre-tournament favourites. With William ‘Mr Chibuku’ Manondo, the man who has scored more goals in the Chibuku tournaments over the years, experience may carry the day for City to make it a third.
