City council should put more bins

Published on

EDITOR — I AM so disturbed about the absence of litter bins in some parts of the central business district.
Zimbabweans are a responsible people who are keen to have a clean environment but are being let down by the absence of facilities to dispose their litter. Heaps of litter in the streets are not only an eyesore but put citizens in the danger of contracting diseases.
Items made of glass, styrofoam or plastic remain in the environment for longer periods as they are not biodegradable.
Litter can harm humans and the environment in different ways. Hazardous materials In litter and illegally dumped rubbish can leach into water sources, contaminate soil, and pollute the air.
Open containers such as paper cups or beverage cans hold water and provide breeding locations for mosquitoes.
Street bins should be provided by the local authorities to be used as a convenient place for the disposal and collection of litter.
Companies and organisations must also commit to cleaning particular streets by availing beans.
