EDITOR – I WANT to express my gratitude to the Government for initiating the Command Agriculture scheme which promises to improve the lives of farmers in Zimbabwe as well as food security in the country.
This programme, along with the Presidential Inputs Scheme, is set to benefit about 300 000 farmers from across the country who are willing to work by empowering the farmers who have in the past only relied on rain-fed agriculture.
Command Agriculture, which will provide inputs and machinery on a cost-recovery basis, will leave the farmers empowered while food production would also improve.
So personally I feel it is a win-win situation for everyone.
This programme, if well implemented, will help restore Zimbabwe’s lost status of being the bread basket of Africa.
The issue of water harvesting to support irrigation schemes under the Command Agriculture will also ensure that next year there will be all-year farming as the 2016-17 rain period has been forecast to have plenty rainfall.
Therefore, I think if Zimbabweans unite and support this Government initiative, our detractors would be put to shame as they delight in the present case of Zimbabwe where we are relying on imports.
Truly, those who have been denouncing the Land Reform Programme will soon be put to shame.
