Significant steps taken in 2014

Published on

IT is befitting that one of the major mundane events to wind up the year is the commemoration of Unity Day on Monday December 22.
For on December 22 1987 the two liberation organisations and main political parties as defined by the people joined hands to form ZANU PF.
This Unity Accord brought with it countrywide peace to the extent that even today it is safe to travel to any part of the country any time without fear.
After all the overriding function of any effective government is the maintenance of law and order.
That is why the country is forever indebted to Cde Robert Mugabe and Dr Joshua Nkomo the respective leaders of the two liberation movements for leading their teams into coming up with this invaluable accord.
This unity has again seen the country successfully overcome mammoth problems this year.
For years the West has been unrelenting in its determination to bring about regime change through sanctions.
For years Zimbabweans as a united people have weathered the sanctions storm and their never-say-die spirit can be illustrated by the successful separation of Siamese twins earlier this year.
This is despite the disadvantage of working from ill-equipped hospitals because of the Western-imposed sanctions which don’t know of any boundary.
In fact, the resilience of Zimbabweans has gradually shown the West that it is not possible to subdue a united people.
Thanks to the Unity Accord of December 22 1987.
No wonder, following mega deals with China and Russia earlier this year, the West is now beginning to relax its stance on sanctions.
The World Bank and six other European donors have already pledged over US$100 million to the Zimbabwe Reconstruction Fund.
May be they are now familiar with the old adage: “if you can’t beat them join them.”
There has been concerted effort to divide the united liberation movements besides the sanctions.
Infiltration into the polity through creation of sponsored political parties proved a disaster on July 31 2013 when the MDC suffered a terminal blow at the polls.
Attempts by our detractors this time to cause regime change from within again suffered a crippling blow at the recent united ZANU PF 6th National People’s Congress.
The cleansing of the people’s party by the people themselves further demonstrates how much it is impossible to divide a people united by ideology and shared values.
What is sure to cement the unity of this united revolutionary party is its apparent intolerance of corruption.
Significant steps were taken in 2014 towards this end.
The exposure of corruption at ZBC and at Premier Service Medical Aid Society culminating in the ditching of the so-called untouchables at the recent ZANU PF Congress are sure signs that the days for corrupt elements are numbered.
We know the prime target of our detractors is our leader, President Mugabe.
What they don’t know is that the more they hate our President, the more the people will be united in their love for him.
Not only us, but the rest of Africa as well.
He is the current Southern African Development Community Chair and is well positioned to assume the Africa Union Chairmanship next year.
So unity has reaped its fair share of rewards this year.
Next year let’s again look towards Independence Day, Heroes’ Day and Unity Day as beacons that should remind us of where we came from and why we should remain united.
Meanwhile we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.
Don’t drink drive during the festive season.
