Cricket team back on the pitch

SANITY returned to the preparations of the ICC World Twenty20 Cricket tournament after the national team resumed training last Monday.
Player boycotts had threatened the preparations by Zimbabwe national team for the T20 tournament hosted by Bangladesh later this month.
Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) organised a five-day T20 tournament for the franchises a fortnight ago, but the players boycotted owing to unpaid salaries and match fees.
As a result, the preparations were in disarray forcing the cricket governing body to come up with another solution.
The inactivity of the franchises affects the national team as the players are drawn from the five teams.
The national team’s preparations are, however, in full-throttle with morning and afternoon sessions daily.
The programme has been running throughout the week before camp breaks on Sunday.
The 20-member team then re-groups on Monday.
The team will be in camp until they depart for Bangladesh on March 5 for the tournament that starts on March 16 and runs until April 6.
Zimbabwe is in Group B of the World Twenty20 qualifiers, with Ireland, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates.
The group winner will proceed with the winner of the other group comprising Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong and Nepal to the Super 10 stage.
At that stage, the group B winner will join England, South Africa, Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Group One.
The Group A winner will join Australia, India, Pakistan and the West Indies in Group Two.
The top two sides after round-robin play in the groups will proceed to the knock-out stage leading to the final.
Zimbabwe open their world cup account with a clash against Ireland on March 17 at Sylhet.
Two days later, Zimbabwe face-off with Netherlands before they play their last Group B match on March 19 at the same venue.
The Nathan Waller-coached side will need to win the three matches to boost their chances of topping the group.
The Flame Lillies as the cricket team are popularly known will need to ignore the salary problems back home and put a sterling performance.
The 20-member squad includes all the stalwarts of Zimbabwean cricket.
Hamilton Masakadza, Elton Chigumbura, Brendan Taylor and Prosper Utseya are in the 15-member team that will be travelling.
Hard-hitting right hand batsman Sikandar Raza continues to catch the eyes of the selectors.
He has impressed since playing his debut for Zimbabwe on May 3, 2013, against Bangladesh.
He batted on number three.
Sean Williams, Brian Vitori and Tinashe Panyangara are part of the travelling team while the recall of Tafadzwa Kamungozi surprised many.
Kamungozi last played for Zimbabwe in 2006, more than six years ago.
Test batsman TinotendaMawoyo has made great strides in his batting as he is now a limited overs batsman too.
His conversion from a Test batsman to a limited overs batsman has been successful.
He will stay behind together with Chamu Chibhabha, Tawanda Mupariwa, Forster Mutizwa and Tinotenda Mutombodzi.
Zimbabwe Squad: Sikandar Raza, Tendai Chatara, Elton Chigumbura, Tafadzwa Kamungozi, Timycen Maruma, Hamilton Masakadza, Shingi Masakadza, Natsai M’shangwe, Tinashe Panyangara, Vusi Sibanda, Brendan Taylor (capt), Prosper Utseya, Brian Vitori, Malcolm Waller, Sean Williams
