Ebola risk at Beitbridge border post

Published on

EDITOR – LET me express my dismay at the way the Beitbridge border post is relaxed over the issue of Ebola.
I travelled recently to South Africa and when I got to the South African side there was thorough screening for Ebola and they did not want to take chances even if they knew that the bus was coming from Zimbabwe which does not have any recorded case of Ebola.
On my way back to Zimbabwe after staying in South Africa I dreaded the border on the Zimbabwe side because I thought there would be screening, but there was no such thing.
An immigration officer had to announce that there was a person from the DRC and they had to run around trying to screen only one person.
The person from DRC could have already transmitted the deadly virus because Ebola is spread through contact of body fluids and as such because of the congestion and running around at the border after a long distance bodies become sweaty hence Ebola can be spread easily.
It was totally absurd to want to screen only one person considering that hundreds of people at the border were now at risk.
If the deadly virus finds its way a result of such incompetence, negligence and complacency it is going to cost the country.
Authorities must take Ebola seriously.
