Let us host more conferences

Published on

EDITOR — I THINK the country and Government should put more effort in programmes to lure international conferences.
When I heard the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and the Tourism and Hospitality Minister Engineer Walter Mzembi talk about the country hosting more international conferences I dismissed them.
But the recent conferences held by members of Jehovah’s Witnesses and the United Methodist Church were evidence of the power of conferences.
Though I never got to attend any of the conferences, I saw roaring business being conducted as a result of these events.
Every sector of business benefited from hotels to transport operators.
Food outlets experienced brisk business while tourist attractions experienced a surge in the number of visitors.
Many travelled to Victoria Falls and other attractions.
I agree that we should do more to attract international conferences.
And this is one of the ways of improving the country’s perception.
Many strolling the streets during the night expressed amazement with the prevailing peace.
Zimbabweans are a friendly people and many were delighted to experience firsthand the famed hospitality of Zimbos.
I have realised that there are many Government initiatives that we should not rush to condemn.
We must be supportive and seek to understand and give a chance the initiatives that we do not fully understand.
